The Meg Trailer Has Jason Statham Declaring War On A Monster Shark

Jason Statham has made a name for himself in Hollywood as an action star, but usually his opponents are humans. Deadly and challenging humans, yes, but humans nonetheless. For his next movie, The Meg, on the other hand, Statham will find himself facing a creature that was thought to been extinct. Officially, this creature is known as the Megalodon, but as you'll see when you watch the first The Meg trailer below, this movie basically boils down to Jason Statham vs. a 75-foot-long monster shark.

An adaptation of the novel by Steve Alten, The Meg takes audiences down to the deepest depths of the Pacific Ocean for a taste of some deep sea terror. The primary ensemble of characters live in a submersible doing oberservation work, but find their lives threatened by the arrival of a massive prehistoric creature: a 75-foot-long shark called the Megalodon. Recognizing the serious threat that this creature represents towards anything it comes close to, a team is assembled to take the thing out by any means necessary.

It feels super appropriate that this trailer will be showing in theaters this weekend before screenings of Brad Peyton's Rampage, starring Dwayne Johnson. Both movies are super silly and ridiculous creature features that just so happen to feature one of the most charismatic action stars currently working in Hollywood today (and the future co-stars of the developing Fast and Furious spin-off). The Meg certainly doesn't look like a film that takes itself too seriously - that Frank Sinatra playing on the soundtrack sets an interesting tone for the horror feature - and hopefully it really leans into that, because it could really be a whole lot of fun. Director Jon Turteltaub isn't exactly the most brilliant director to work in the industry (his credits including National Treasure, Cool Runnings, and Last Vegas), but perhaps this movie will be an awakening that proves he should be spending his entire career making blockbusters about monster sharks. It very well might be his calling, and this trailer honestly makes this one look pretty awesome.

Along with Jason Statham playing the main protagonist, The Meg's main cast includes Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao, Cliff Curtis and Jessica McNamee. The Meg will wreak havoc in theaters on August 10th, and we'll have more news and information about the film for you as we get closer and closer to its domestic release. In the meantime, if you wish to find out what is set to arrive in your local cinema between now and then, be sure to consult with our 2018 release schedule.
