Will Brie Larson's Captain Marvel Be In Shang-Chi? Director Destin Daniel Cretton Weighs In

Brie Larson as Captain Marvel

At San Diego-Comic Con Kevin Feige teased that Captain Marvel 2 was a movie that was on the way, though no release date was given. Without that we have no idea when we might see Brie Larson back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe again. Unless, of course, she shows up in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

It might sound like an odd pairing. Yes, it would be an odd pairing. However, the idea isn't necessarily all that crazy when you consider that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Cretton has directed four feature films to date, and the last three of them have included Brie Larson in the cast.

With the two being such frequent collaborators, it was natural for MTV to ask Destin Daniel Cretton if Captain Marvel might appear alongside Shang-Chi. Cretton says he 's certainly open to the possibility, though it doesn't sound particularly likely...

I mean, I think there's always room for Brie but I don't know. We'll see.

It does seem like getting Captain Marvel alongside Shang-Chi would require a crowbar to find a place in the story to put the intergalactic hero. With the title Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings making it pretty clear that the story is going to be grounded in Earth based characters, it would not appear like there's an easy way to include Brie Larson.

That, and Carol Danvers is so incredibly powerful that bringing her in at all would likely destroy whatever tension the move tries to build.

As far as wheat the story of Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings will actually be about, the title certainly implies we will be getting a story associated with the Iron Man franchise, as the Ten Rings organization popped up there a couple of times. We may also get the real Mandarin, as Ben Kingsley's character in Iron Man 3 was revealed to be a fake.

Whatever the plot may be, Destin Daniel Cretton says he will find the story through the characters and that he hopes to find someplace there that he, and the rest of the audience, can make a connection...

For me, the approach to everything is the same. I search for the story through the characters and I search for the themes through something that I will really emotionally connect with, and that's what we're trying to do with that.

For the most part, the character that audiences will need to connect with is Shang-Chi himself, who will be played by Simu Liu. Cretton has only great things to say about him. The director seems quite excited to be getting ready to go to work on the new Marvel movie.

He's awesome. There's just an undefined thing that when somebody pops, everybody's in agreement and there're just really excited.
