Over the weekend, the first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984, the highly-anticipated sequel the 2017 superhero film, finally debuted! Back in the ‘70s, audiences were no stranger to Diana Prince’s wonder. Lynda Carter memorably played the DC hero on television between 1975 and 1979. Along with fellow superhero star Brie Larson, Carter has an awesome response to the first look at the sequel. Check it out:
Yes! There’s nothing better than an official co-sign from the actress who so many have fondly remembered as Wonder Woman for years! The 68-year-old actress called the trailer “pure brilliance” in her tweet, specifically pointing her compliment to writer/director Patty Jenkins. She’s not alone; a lot of fans were digging the Wonder Woman 1984 sneak peek. Another story starring Gal Gadot really reeled us in, Carter included!
The trailer follows Diana Prince in 1984, almost 70 years after the events of the first film. Gal Gadot’s character is, of course, looking just as youthful as she hangs out with Kristen Wiig’s Barbara Minerva – who will become the villain Cheetah over the course of the film. It heavily calls back to the death of her first love, Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor, before the character shows up in the time period and they reunite. But, seriously… how?
Wonder Woman 1984 also sets up powerful businessman Maxwell Lord, who appears to be another villain in the sequel. The movie tackles the Reagan Era, when commercial shopping malls and bright-colored fashioned reigned in pop culture. There’s also a few flashes back to Diana Prince’s home of Themyscira and her badass Golden Eagle Armor.
Along with Lynda Carter’s co-sign, fans thanked the actress’ legacy as TV's first Wonder Woman. Many even shared their hope for Carter to have a cameo in Wonder Woman 1984. It would be an awesome callback! If there’s any Wonder Woman to include the iconic actress, this is the one, considering she’d be famous at that time. It’d also be funny if the movie calls back to the television show, potentially having roots in Gadot’s debut in the late 1910s within the universe.
When Lynda Carter was asked about appearing in the sequel back in 2017, she said she’s “absolutely” open to it. We’ll have to see how things shake out! According to Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 is already “done” five and a half months early. The movie is amongst exciting summer blockbuster season coming June 1, 2020.
Also on DC’s side of things, Birds of Prey hits theaters on February 7, 2020. Matt Reeves’ The Batman, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and Black Adam all arrive in 2021, and Shazam 2 and The Flash were recently given 2022 release dates to join in on Aquaman’s return.
