Countless movie projects were shut down last year as a result of closed sets and theaters. That includes Matt ReevesThe Batman, which will star Robert Pattinson in the title role. The cast also features Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, and the Westworld actor recently described the difficulty of filming during lockdown.

Anticipation for The Batman has been building since the all-star cast and limited footage were revealed to the general public. Filming eventually began in the midst of the pandemic, with new safety and health protocols being adopted. Matt Reeves got his movie in the can, but not without difficulty. Jeffrey Wright recently explained his experience filming the new movie, saying;

It was gothic. It was sleuthful if that’s a word. It was mysterious, and it was tricky. It was tricky because of the conditions that we were working in. It was isolating for those of us who were away from home, out of the country, over in London. I experienced more quarantines than I would wish on anyone, going back and forth over the last six months. So it was a pretty dogged one to try to pull off. We were working in the teeth of the outbreak, and we were trying to protect ourselves, one another and the production. So it took a lot.

Sometimes art imitates life. And in the case of The Batman, it seems the lockdown really helped Jeffrey Wright feel like he was living in Gotham City during production. Because with cases surging in the U.K. several times while filming, Wright and company experienced even more isolation as various lockdowns were initiated.

Jeffrey Wright’s comments to THR show what it’s really like working on a comic book movie like The Batman. While moviegoers will see the epic finished product, actually filming is another experience entirely. This is especially true in the days of COVID, where there’s increased uncertainty

Following The Batman, Matt Reeves is expected to work on a prequel series for HBO Max. You can use this link to sign up for the streaming service.

Those paying close attention to The Batman’s production might not be surprised by Jeffrey Wright’s experience. The set was definitely in fear of the pandemic, especially after Robert Pattinson himself reportedly contracted the virus during principal photography. Luckily the Twilight icon was able to recover safely, and continue bringing Bruce Wayne to life in this new adaptation.

Anticipation for The Batman has been steadily building, largely due to the limited footage which was released last summer. In it we saw a stripped down take on Gotham City, and a less experienced Caped Crusader. The movie will presumably see the rise of three iconic villains in the form of Penguin, Riddler, and Catwoman.

The Batman is currently expected to arrive in theaters on March 4th, 2022. In the meantime, check out the 2021 movie release dates to plan your next movie experience
