Video game enthusiasts are patiently awaiting the upcoming Tomb Raider game, an origin story that promises a reboot to the action-thriller franchise that made curvaceous adventurer Lara Croft a household name.

Did someone say reboot? Then Hollywood can’t be far behind. Since the film industry loves reheating its leftovers, it too has begun work on a new Tomb Raider film, hoping to polish the franchise for a new generation. Gone is Angelina Jolie, who donned skintight outfits to star as treasure-seeker Croft in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and its 2003 sequel. In her place will be an as-yet-uncast female lead who also hopes to reboot the Croft character and, according to producers, mold her into the next Ellen Ripley (from the Alien franchise) or Terminator beauty Sarah Connor. Bold words. We’ll see if they can live up to those claims.

The Tomb Raider reboot takes a step in the right direction today by bringing co-writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby aboard, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The duo previously collaborated on Jon Favreau’s first Iron Man, as well as his upcoming Cowboys & Aliens. They’re also credited with Alfonso Cuaron’s masterful Children of Men. Impressive, to say the least. While I’d much rather see an original character get valuable screen time, or see Lara Croft scrapped for an Uncharted feature film, if Tomb Raider has to return, it sounds like they got the right guys to pen an adventure.

As of right now, the Tomb Raider reboot is expected in theaters in 2013.
