California residents and tourists rejoice! Disneyland announced on Friday that Space Mountain has been restored to its former glory and is now open for parkgoers to ride. The ride opened up for the first time in three weeks on Friday evening, allowing weekend riders the opportunity to hop aboard.
Just a few weeks ago the Mickey Mouse-loving company voluntarily closed down the ride after state inspectors came in and found safety to be an issue. State inspectors were called in following an injury to a worker on the premises who, according to the LA Times, had fallen off a roof while cleaning and was injured when his harness did not work properly. This prompted the safety inspection and subsequent shutdown of the ride.
Space Mountain was closed last month, along with two other rides, The Matterhorn and Soarin' Over California, so that the Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure could undergo changes to its safety procedures. The Matterhorn and Soarin’ Over California were subsequently opened. Disney didn’t get away scot-free during the safety problems. Not only did the company have to shut down rides, they were also fined $234,850. Now, however, everything is back up and running and hopefully, a little more safety for the park’s employees is assured.
While Disney parks have had some issues with safety in the past, the company is constantly revising policies and fixing procedures in order to stay up-to-date with the law and maintain a safe work environment for its employees. Sure, there are plenty of problems and there have been accidents, but there are certainly parks with different and more dangerous problems to worry about.
