Divergent Book 3 Officially Titled Allegiant

Since the announcement that the third and final book in Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy, fans of the series have been eagerly awaiting the title and the cover. While the cover has yet to be revealed, we now know the title and it's not Detergent, though the announcement video above does drop that one among the suggestions before revealing that the last book is titled Allegiant.

I like it. There's a loyal sound to it and it has the word "giant" in it, which deviates a bit from the "gent" suffix of Divergent and Insurgent, but it's the last book. It should have a big name.

The first book in the trilogy introduces us to Tris Prior, a teen living in Dystopian Chicago where society is broken up into five factions, which determine a person's way of life. It's kind of like Hogwarts houses, except not only does a person's choice typically reflect their nature, but their faction requires a certain standard of behavior that they must adhere to if they want to fit in among their people. The story has Tris and her brother choosing their factions, and then Tris must begin training to find her place among her group. But the catch is, she learns she's Divergent, which means she'll never fully fit in to any one faction. And the authorities don't like Divergents, so she needs to keep it a secret as she builds allies and tries to make it through training.

The book is set to becoming a movie, which is due out next March and stars Shailene Woodley in the lead role. Ashley Judd and Scandal's Tony Goldwyn just recently joined the cast of the film to play Tris' parents. The movie is currently in production in Chicago.

The second book, Insurgent, takes the story further, picking up immediately after Book 1 left off, but to get into specifics there would spoil the ending of Book 1. Fortunately, the synopsis for Book 3 is vague. USA Today says Allegiant will have Tris facing "the impossible choices about where her loyalties lie and how she will live in the world beyond the walls of her dystopian Chicago." So there's that word "loyalty," which is a synonym for allegiance, and makes Allegiant feel like a particularly fitting title.

Allegiant is due out October 22. You can pre-order it over at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
