Sorry Justin Bieber. In what must have come as devastating news for the beleaguered pop star, the Biebs lost his status as the world’s most followed person today when Katy Perry blew right past him. At this moment, her account now boasts more than 46.5 million supporters, roughly about 30,000 more than her younger counterpart who held the world’s most followed person title for about nine months.
Obviously, Perry’s biggest supporters have been celebrating the Twitter title, but more than that, many of them and various news outlets for that matter, have been discussing the perceived wider ramifications. As the most followed person in the world, it would stand to reason Perry is the most popular musician in the world. Maybe.
On the one hand, there’s little denying what a raging success her single ”Roar” has been. Prior to its release just days apart from Lady Gaga’s single “Applause”, most outlets were hyping up a slugfest battle between the two incredibly popular women, but it actually didn’t turn out to be much of a battle at all. The Mother Monster’s track never really get off the ground, and Perry’s became an anthem almost over night. Coupled with all of the popularity she generated before, it’s easy to see why many would tout her as the biggest musician.
On the other hand, however, Perry might be the most followed celebrity, but she’s certainly not the most talked about one. Beyond that, she’s definitely not the most well-reviewed musician or the one with the longest run of popularity either. So, branding her the world’s biggest musician kinda seems premature and misguided.
