The Pitt Season 2, Episode 13 Live Blog: Night Shift Has Bad News, Robby’s About To Break, And Foreshadowing A Major Exit
The day shift is over, but the fight isn't over for Robby and the rest of the doctors and nurses of The Pitt.
Robby Finally Admits It... Kind Of
With just two episodes left to go after this one, is it any surprise that Episode 13 ended on a confrontation between Dana and Robby that sets up plenty of emotional turmoil before the final credits roll on Season 2? Noah Wyle and Katherine LaNasa are always great together – possibly even more so when Robby and Dana are fighting than when they're getting along.
And both were actually making solid points, with Robby listing some valid concerns about how he'd be leaving the ED behind vs. Dana pointing out again and again that he needs to go home and they can manage without him until he gets back.
Unfortunately, the message of "We can do this without you" is probably the last thing that Robby needs to hear at this point, because he finally came out and said it: "What if I don't come back?"
The Pitt has been hinting over the course of Season 2 that the ED doctor's sabbatical plan was actually his means of ending his own life if riding his motorcycle across Pittsburgh without a helmet didn't do it first. Maybe it's a good thing that he came right out and said it, even if it was part of a fight. Based on the preview for next week's episode, it'll be enough for Dana to recruit Abbot to talk to Robby. Take a look:
The Pitt obviously isn't a comedy, and nothing about Robby's thoughts of ending his own life is funny, but I'll admit to getting a laugh out of the shot of a man who was apparently stabbed with a miniature American flag. Since my suspicion that a fireworks accident was going to be the big crisis of the season seems to have fizzled out, it just seems right to have somebody who was stabbed with a flag. It feels very fitting for a 4th of July injury in an emergency room.
And that it's for another hour of The Pitt Season 2! See what's next before the final credits roll with Episode 14 next Thursday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max. Every other episode so far is already available on the streamer, and I for one might spend the next few days going back to revisit any signs of what might be wrong with Dr. Al-Hashimi... or if I missed any moments of Langdon being a nerd.
Whitaker Sending Ogilvie Home To Spare Him Embarrassment Is Very Nice
But has Ogilvie just been carrying his keys and wallet around all day to be able to just leave? Surely those scrub pockets can only be filled with so much weight, right? Does Ogilvie just have to loiter outside until Season 3?
Read The Room, Noelle
Was it right for Noelle to let Lorrie Diaz know that she and her family don't have to worry about the cost of Orlando's treatment moving forward? Sure. Was it INCREDIBLY tactless to not read even the first page of the room, with Lorrie slowly but surely breaking down in front of her? 100%. I'm starting to see why Mohan might want to move on from PTMC... if I squint, anyway.
Langdon's A Nerd, Part Deux
I was already endeared last week but how purely delighted Langdon was when he nerded out over the Fort Pitt reenactors were in the ED last week. Now, hearing Mel drop a pearl of wisdom and naming it as a reference to Friedrich Nietzsche? A+. More of Langdon the dork, please!
Also, an A+ to Mel for indirectly admitting that her source for the "That which does not kill me makes me stronger" was actually Kelly Clarkson.
Who Needs More Than Two Shifts To Become Best Friends?

Dr. Langdon Almost Messed Up
With how quickly the traumas move on The Pitt, sometimes it's hard to tell when exactly something goes wrong. With the focus on Langdon almost intubating the kid with the collapsed lung, I think it's a safe bet what had him looking so freaked out in the preview for Episode 13. Enter Mel with the pep talk!!! Hopefully, anyway.
What's Wrong With Dr. Al-Hashimi?
Something is clearly off with Dr. Al-Hashimi, not least because the "Previously On" segment included a clip of when she placed her urgent phone call to a doctor without actually spelling out the exact reasons why. Now that Mohan confirmed to Robby that she'd noticed the same thing that he did with the new attending zoning out for a few seconds, it seems that mystery is going to be solved.
Whether than happens by the end of the hour or the end of the season, I'm at least starting to be much more confident that we'll get some closure on the storyline. But I do hope that it's not a kind of closure that takes her out of the ED, because I've gotten attached to Dr. Al-Hashimi over the past 12.5 hours.
I Already Miss Mohan
Mohan's arc this whole season has been rough to watch, with her stress level rising higher and higher from the start. It was easier to enjoy when I thought that she'd be back in Season 4 with a PTMC ED fellowship, whether in geriatrics or something else. Her terrible day is a lot more depressing in the knowledge that we're not going to see her getting a good day... that is, unless she just joins another department at PTMC and just pops down every once in a while as a guest star.
Whitaker And Santos = BFFs?
I've spent most of Season 2 wanting to see Mel make a friend and hoping to see Langdon connect with a friend, but Santos is really showing off how much she needs Whitaker as a best pal. Besides, I seem to be getting my wish for Langdon and Mel connecting with each other anyway. Ask him to stay as your roomie, Santos!
Special Guest Star: Sara Wyle
If you're wondering about the actress playing the patient with what looks like severe jaundice, that would be Sara Wyle, a.k.a. the wife of Noah Wyle. After Brad Dourif played Fiona Dourif's dad in Season 1, The Pitt really is becoming a family affair.
Welcome To The Pitt, Dr Henderson
I've only had Dr. Crus Henderson for eleven minutes, but I need The Pitt to keep him forever. The night shift really is the gift that keeps on giving, because he's a great fit with Abbot, Shen, and Ellis, as far as I can tell. Welcome to the cast, Luke Tennie!
Night Shift Is Keeping Day Shift Around
Something inevitably was going to go wrong to keep day shift around, since the 15-episode season runs for longer than a 12-hour shift. Last season, it was a mass casualty event. This season, it's something less horrifying but still dreaded: paperwork. Yes, Santos is no longer the only doctor who needs to catch up on charting now that the computer system is back up and the physical copies need to be digitized.
If only Noah Wyle could channel his inner John Carter from his '90s ER days, he could blow through some physical paperwork!
The Pitt Isn't About Romance, But I Need One Love Story To Last
The Pitt is supposed to be a realistic medical drama and therefore not about romance, but there is a love story that I've truly believed in since Season 1, and that is Dr. Shen and his iced coffee from Dunkin' Donuts. Apparently, we can add cake to the list of things he loves, and I appreciate his that his disappointment that Robby didn't want a big farewell is tied to his desire for cake.
Mohan's Bad Day Is Getting Worse
In case we'd forgotten how Robby blew up at Dr. Mohan when she had a panic attack, that "Previously On" was a nice reminder. I'm definitely hoping that she gets a triumphant final arc of Season 2, but heartbreak via Orlando isn't what I had in mind.
What To Expect From Episode 13
Well, The Pitt has been pointing towards Robby having some kind of breakdown before the end of the day, with increasingly heavy hints that his motorcycle sabbatical is a very, very, very bad idea. In fact, the preview for Episode 13 shows that he seems closer to snapping than ever, slamming down a phone more aggressively than necessary. Take a look:
Additionally, news broke ahead of the episode that series regular Supriya Ganesh will not be back for Season 3, while Ayesha Harris will be promoted to series regular status as Dr. Ellis next season. While it's not exactly something to celebrate that we only have three episodes left with Dr. Mohan, Ayesha Harris' Instagram post about her promotion – which is worth celebrating, if you ask me, because who doesn't love Dr. Ellis? – reveals that she'd been "wanting to share this for a while now."
Perhaps the twist of Mohan leaving was decided far enough back that the foreshadowing will pick up in these last few episodes. My eyes are peeled for clues that the writers may have been dropping!
