Power Renewed For Season 2 After One Episode

Starz doesn't usually waste much time when it comes to renewals. In fact, they've actually renewed certain series before their first season debuts. That's not the case with Power, which kicked off its first season late last week, but it's certainly not surprising that they would be quick to give the green light for a second season on Power. The new drama, which has Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson among the executive producers, only just debuted its first episode last Saturday night.

Starz made the announcement today that they're ordering a second season of Power. The drama series, which debuted June 7, stars Omari Hardwick as James "Ghost" St. Patrick, a New York City drug kingpin who's getting a taste of legitimacy as he opens a hot new nightclub. Though the business is really just a front through which to launder his money, it's causing him to question his future and entertain the idea of getting out of the drug business and targeting a more legal occupation. The first season consists of eight episodes, and it looks like Starz is aiming for an even bigger taste of Power in its second season, as they've ordered ten episodes for Season 2.

Created by Courtney Kemp Agboh, the series is executive produced by 50 Cent. Here they are pictured together...

In addition to Hardwick, Power also stars Naturi Naughton, Joseph Sikura and Lela Loren.

Reviews on the series have been mixed, with just a 36% fresh rating at RottenTomatoes (out of 14 reviews). Personally, based on the first few episodes, I think the drama shows promise and was among those that gave it a mostly positive review. The characters and the story are interesting enough that I'd like to see where the show goes. While it's too soon to say, I get the sense that there could be some big twists coming up as the first season ensues. Or I'm hoping there will be. Whether or not that's the case remains to be seen. But it's clear Starz is interested enough in the show to keep it around beyond this summer.

Power airs Saturday at 9:00 p.m. Et on Starz. Production is slated to begin on Season 2 in October.
