Simone Biles was flawless as usual in her Monday night performance on Dancing With The Stars, and while the fans loved it, the judges had some biting words for the Olympic champ. With yet another perfect score denied, the judges began to criticize Biles for her lack of emotion. Biles then clapped back to host Tom Bergeron with her statement "Smiles don't win gold medals" and sent the internet ablaze with support for the young favorite. Now that the dust has settled, here's what Biles had to say regarding the comment the next day:
I feel like everyone has their own opinion, clearly, and I feel it's just how you take it. . . . I feel like I am trying, I am being honest, but if they don't see that, I don't know what more I can do.
Simone Biles did state as much to the Dancing With The Stars judges, all of which universally criticized her for not revealing too much of her character and emotion behind her performances. Biles informed her harshest critics Julianne Hough, Erin Andrews, and Carrie Ann Inaba that she's lived in a gym nearly two-thirds of her life and there are things she has not experienced that other girls her age have. The comment probably stung Biles just as much as the judges, who told Entertainment Tonight she fought off tears during the critique. As it may sound silly for an Olympic gold medalist to get so worked up over a dance competition, it definitely makes sense to me seeing the competitor that Biles is.
Simone Biles is an Olympic athlete and that takes years of dedication to eating, sleeping and breathing perfection. As she plainly stated, smiling through criticism didn't earn her 4 Gold medals at the Rio Olympics and twelve additional gold medals throughout world championships. You don't get that successful being "good enough," so if anything it's a real compliment to Dancing With The Stars that she's investing this much heart and emotion into the series. That said, the rules of dance competitions seem a bit less clear cut than gymnastics as Biles talks about the struggle in giving the judges what they want:
You don't know which wild card of sexy or of happy they want to bring, and you almost have to read their minds and find it.
Perhaps the world's reaction to Simone Biles being real with the judges might urge them to ease up on her a bit next week when Dancing With The Stars is all new May 15th at 8 p.m. ET. Tune in to watch that and also have your DVR set for some of the other great programming airing that week.
