First Trailer For Errol Morris' Netflix Show Wormwood Is A Trippy Look At The CIA's LSD Trials

While we know Netflix for its sizzling scripted shows like Stranger Things and GLOW, the streaming service has also been building up its library with compelling docu-series. Making a Murderer captured audiences' attentions, and now Wormwood could be poising itself to be the country's next obsession. The multi-part docudrama is based on the CIA's real experiments with LSD on unsuspecting people. If that's not enough for you, Wormwood comes from Academy Award-winner Errol Morris. Check out the first trailer for the series below, showing off its trippy drug-induced visuals.

Wormwood is a six-episode nonfiction crime story that takes a look at the CIA's LSD experiments in the 1950s. The documentary/scripted hybrid is anchored by the true story of Frank Rudolph Olson, a CIA employee who plunged to his death out of a New York City hotel in 1953 after being given LSD without his knowledge. Though his death has been officially described as a suicide and a murder, Olson's sons, Eric and Nils Olson, filed a lawsuit against the government in 2012. The series mixes interviews with real people -- such as one of Olson's sons -- with scripted content that is described as unconventional re-enactments.

You can see a brief tease of those "unconventional re-enactments" in the above trailer. The footage doesn't paint too broad a picture, but it gives a decent idea of what viewers are in for. The LSD-induced trippy visuals look to be on point, and they should make for a show that is at least visually captivating. The cast of actors starring in the docudrama includes Peter Sarsgaard, Molly Parker, Christian Camargo, Scott Shepherd, Tim Blake Nelson, Bob Balaban, Jimmi Simpson and Michael Chernus.

The series comes from Errol Morris, a documentarian who has won an Oscar for Best Documentary. He is known for marvelous documentaries such The Thin Blue Line and Fog of War -- the latter scoring him an Oscar back in 2004. He's a big creative talent to have on the show, so his name alone should be enough to get people excited and to check Wormwood out when it hits Netflix later this year.

Wormwood is currently set to debut on Netflix on December 15, 2017. To learn more about all the big releases hitting Netflix over the next few months, be sure to check out our Netflix release guide.
