Hulu's Four Weddings And A Funeral Series Adds Star From Original Film

Four Weddings and a Funeral

Tell your crazy drunk friends there's another Four Weddings and a Funeral coming. Hulu is remaking the classic 1994 movie as a TV series, executive produced by Mindy Kaling. The show is going into production for its 2019 debut, and the full cast was just revealed -- including at least one main star from the original film.

In the original Four Weddings, Andie MacDowell played Carrie -- American love interest of Hugh Grant's Charles -- and the actress is meant to return as a new character. Specifically, she'll play the mother of one of the new stars.

Also, Hulu's version recast the lead role that was going to be played by Jessica Williams. Now Game of Thrones star Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei) has that lead role of Maya.

Game of Thrones, Nathalie Emmanuel

The story follows four American friends who reunite in London for a wedding. Since this is a series, not a TV show, there's a lot more to the story. This time, according to Deadline, a major bombshell at the altar throws everyone's lives upside-down. The friends will be shown through a year of romance and heartbreak -- with relationships newly forged and broken, political scandals exposed, and London social life spoofed. Through it all, there will of course be four weddings and a funeral.

The four friends are Maya (Nathalie Emmanuel), Craig (Brandon Mychal Smith), Ainsley (Rebecca Rittenhouse), and Duffy (John Reynolds). Andie MacDowell will guest star as Ainsley's mother, Mrs. Howard. Other newly announced cast members include Zoe Boyle as Gemma, Jennie Jacques as Zara, Harish Patel as Haroon, and Guz Khan as Basheer.

The original Four Weddings and a Funeral ended with Charles and Carrie together, having a son. But instead of bringing back Carrie, Deadline said Andie MacDowell will be playing a new character for the series. So as much as she's a link to the original film, she's not as much of a link as bringing back her original character 25 years later.

Four Weddings was the making of Hugh Grant's career and he almost didn't get the role, because he was considered too handsome. It's a strange problem to have, but since the movie was such a huge success, it definitely sets a high bar for this remade limited series.

Nathalie Emmanuel is on a hot streak with blockbuster franchises, so this romantic comedy is a departure for her. She's best known for playing Daenerys Targaryen's right-hand woman Missandei on Game of Thrones -- which just finished filming its final season for an April 2018 premiere on HBO. Emmanuel is also known for her roles as Harriet in two Maze Runner films, and Megan Ramsey in two Fast and Furious movies.

Hulu has yet to release a premiere date for this Four Weddings and a Funeral limited series, but it will arrive in 2019. Keep up with what's still ahead this year, and bookmark the 2019 midseason premiere schedule.

Gina Carbone

Gina grew up in Massachusetts and California in her own version of The Parent Trap. She went to three different middle schools, four high schools, and three universities -- including half a year in Perth, Western Australia. She currently lives in a small town in Maine, the kind Stephen King regularly sets terrible things in, so this may be the last you hear from her.
