Could The Vampire Diaries' Paul Wesley Return For Legacies In A Role Other Than Stefan?

Stefan Salvatore The Vampire Diaries The Originals The CW

Paul Wesley is known for playing Stefan Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries, and the actor has shut the door hard on the character being revived after Stefan's bittersweet finale death. However, Wesley just returned to Mystic Falls to direct the episode of Legacies Season 1 that aired last night -- revealing Landon's big supernatural secret. There's already hope that Wesley will return to direct another episode of The Originals/Vampire Diaries spinoff in Season 2. However, it sounds like maybe he'd possibly be open to returning as one of the monsters-of-the-week? Here's what Paul Wesley said when asked what kind of monster he'd hope for if he came back to direct another episode:

It would be great to play a flawed monster, maybe a monster who doesn’t want to be a monster, or has some level of humor to his viciousness. The best characters are ones where you can see their humanity. It would be great to be the antithesis of what the cliché monster is.

It sounds like TVLine was just asking what kind of monster-of-the-week he'd want to direct -- like the super-cool ending to last night's episode that revealed Landon is actually a phoenix. But Paul Wesley's answer put himself in the monster's shoes as the actor playing the role. That's actually a great idea! Let's leave Stefan Salvatore's legacy alone but keep Wesley in the family having a blast dressing up as some kind of monster.

TVLine joked that his description of a "flawed monster" with humanity sounded like Stefan. Here's Paul Wesley's response to that:

Yeah, I guess, although I’d like my monster to have a little more humor.

Maybe he could be the Necromancer's cousin? That Legacies monster certainly had a lot of fun. Either way, it's fun to think of Paul Wesley returning to The Vampire Diaries and The Originals' joint spinoff in a humorous new role, maybe hidden under a lot of makeup and prosthetics.

Humor is something Paul Wesley said he was drawn to in Legacies. Stefan was a pretty self-serious guy on The Vampire Diaries -- Damon got most of the humor -- and Wesley liked the lighter tone of Legacies. Last night's episode was fantastic, but not terribly light; still, Wesley said he had a great time directing it and was especially proud of how it ended.

Paul Wesley also directed the Roswell, New Mexico episode that aired this week. He has a lot of projects lined up behind-the-scenes and in front of the camera. (Just like his former on-screen bro Ian Somerhalder/Damon Salvatore.)

Legacies Season 1 ends with Episode 16 at the end of March, but The CW has already renewed the show for Season 2. Now we have a glimmer of hope that Paul Wesley might return, not just as director but perhaps -- only perhaps! -- to don some makeup for a monster role, even if it's just a fun cameo. Pencil him in, Julie Plec!

Legacies continues Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW, as one of the many shows now airing in midseason 2019.
