The Spider-Man TV Universe Just Took A Big Step Forward

Spider-Man Spider-Woman Spider-Man: Into The Spider-verse

Sony teased earlier this year it was looking into expanding its Spider-verse in a big way, and now it's finally pulled the trigger. Sony Pictures TV has seemingly ensured it and the world will get a boatload of more Spider-Man-related content after securing a deal with the creative minds behind Spider-Man: Into The Spider-verse. Phil Lord and Chris Miller are now officially locked down in a five-year deal with the studio that some have valued in a nine-figure range.

The exact dollar amount is unknown, but we do know this means Phil Lord and Chris Miller will now make and develop their own series for Sony TV and will also oversee the projects of others. This includes being involved in Sony's plans for developing television shows for the characters within its Spider-Man license. Among others, THR reports these characters include Spider-Man, Venom, Morbius, Black Cat, and Silver Sable.

There's also talk that shows will be developed based on Spider-Man: Into The Spider-verse, which the duo produced and Phil Lord wrote the screenplay for. Obviously, there may be some interest on the two's part to further expand that franchise, although it hasn't been confirmed what Lord or Chris Miller will be working on.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller's new deal with Sony TV ends their deal with 20th Century Television, where the duo produced some solid content. This includes the much-acclaimed Last Man on Earth, but also includes the far less-celebrated Son Of Zorn. Beyond Spider-Man: Into The Spider-verse, the two had previously collaborated with Sony on the 21 Jump Street franchise, and Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs.

With this new deal, Sony is in a great position to cash in on Marvel content that is incredibly popular with audiences. Though it only has the license to characters within the world of Spider-Man, audiences responded well to its movies with these characters even in instances where reviews were not great. Sony TV may not be the home for Marvel content in the near future, but it's certainly positioning itself to be the definitive home of Spider-Man on the small screen.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller's deal is a big show of faith by Sony in general, which is seemingly going all-in on Spider-Man in the near future. These future TV projects are supplemented by the upcoming sequels of Venom and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-verse, and the live-action Morbius movie in development. Suffice to say, there will be no-shortage of web-slinging adventures for audiences to enjoy in the near future.
