Modern Family's Eric Stonestreet Wants To Work With Jesse Tyler Ferguson Again After Final Season

Modern Family ABC

As Modern Family gears up for its final season on television this fall, it's only natural that the ABC series' stars get questions about their next move. Some stars may know what they want to do, others are undecided, and others have already revealed what their next move will be.

So where does Cam actor Eric Stonestreet fall in those categories? Stonestreet spoke to CinemaBlend about Modern Family and life after, and when we asked if his future plans involve another project with on-screen husband Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Stonestreet indicated he'd totally want to work with his co-star again.

Absolutely not. [Laughs.] You can write that as long as you say I was kidding. Of course [I would]. Jesse and I, from day one, we hit it off. We’re two different people. What he comes from, what he did to get where he’s at; where I come from, what I did to get where I’m at. Our collision happened, completely different paths, completely different people. We have so much respect for each other. I respect what he does. Pretty sure he respects what I do and who I am. I think we probably would want to, like, not jump right into something different. I think if they came to us and said ‘We want to do something with Mitch and Cam,’ I think we would have to talk about and figure it out and if that’s really what each of us creatively wanted to do. But as far as our personal and interpersonal relationship, I think we’ve been in a couple arguments over the course of the show and they ended very quickly because we both were like ‘This is uncomfortable, don’t be mad at me, I don’t want to be mad at you.’ We just got lucky. But it’s also, we both from the beginning were so excited and happy to get these characters and get these parts if we would have started with anything other than gratitude and excitement, that would have told us each a lot about each other.

It turns out that while the Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson have had their disagreements over the years, Stonestreet is feeling pretty good about working with him again after Modern Family Season 11. Stonestreet specifically mentioned a scenario where they'd be pitched something along the lines of a show that gives audiences more "Mitch and Cam," which is interesting. He could've been speaking to the general character dynamic, or the possibility of a spinoff that somehow focuses solely on the duo's family.

The mere thought of more Modern Family, even if it's a spinoff, may be very exciting to fans, but don't get too hyped. Eric Stonestreet made it clear that nothing has been decided on yet for his career post-Modern Family, and he's not sure what Jesse Tyler Ferguson has going on either.

But we’ll see what happens. I don’t know what he wants to do after this. I don’t know what I want to do after this. Of course, we would work together on something again. It would be fun to see us in different roles.

Seeing Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson appear in different roles would be almost more exciting than a Modern Family spinoff, as it would be neat to see the duo come together as entirely different characters. Personally, I'd love to see the duo be the next investigating team on a season of True Detective. Is there any further creative shift from starring in an ABC comedy?
