The end of an era is nearly here, as Keeping Up with the Kardashians is preparing to wrap up its 20-season run. Soon fans will no longer be able to see the daily exploits of the Kardashian/Jenner clan as they balance family, celebrity and drama. As the show reaches its conclusion, viewers are now starting to get more details on the family’s decision to end their long-running reality show. And the most recent episode has now shed light on how Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian and their family managed to keep the decision a secret.

When it comes to reality TV, one of the trickiest elements for its stars has to be keeping things under wrap, since cameras are on them constantly. When it came time for Kris Jenner and her family to make a decision regarding the future of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, the family went to great lengths to keep things hush-hush from the crew. Via her Instagram Stories, Kim Kardashian recently shared Jenner’s sentiments from her personal interview on the show:

This is a big day for me and my family because we’re gonna discuss whether or not we want to move forward with filming Keeping Up with the Kardashians. And we’re filming it on our iPhones because we don’t want the crew to film it and have them hear the conversation. But at the same time we wanted to document it because it’s an important day.

So it turns out the family had to resort to filming the show on mobile devices in order to keep things under wraps from the crew. It may sound like a lot but, given the circumstances, it was really the only way to ensure that nothing leaked before they assembled the crew to break the news. It’s a pretty massive and personal decision and, based on their exchange during the family meeting, both Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian understood that:

Kris Jenner: We all have to be on the same page and be really happy and peaceful and OK with the decision, because it’s a huge, huge decision. They’re expecting an answer and we can’t really go backwards.

Kim Kardashian: I mean, it is really scary. Like a big change to like, say, ‘We’re not doing this anymore. Then what are we going to do when we wake up.’

Shortly after news broke that Keeping Up with the Kardashians would be ending, Kris Jenner spoke on the family’s reasoning for ending the show. She explained that the decision was sudden but that everyone felt the time was right. Kim Kardashian echoed these thoughts during her personal interview on the show:

We love being on camera, we love sharing our lives, we love that whole aspect of it. It’s just that so many factors have come into our lives. We’re now so busy.We have to just think about what we want.

All in all, the Kardashians seem to be at peace with the decision and, based on what’s been seen on the show, they’ve had plenty of support. Kim Kardashian even revealed during the episode (filmed months ago) that now-estranged husband Kanye West reacted to the news by advising her to do whatever makes her happy.

Keeping Up with the Kardashians may be winding down, but the show is sure to give fans even more memorable moments during the final stretch of episodes. You can catch new episodes Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on E!.
