The Reality Competition Series Sees Music Superstar Hopefuls Performing As Their Dream Avatars

Television remains one of the most accessible forms of escapism, allowing audiences to get immersed in other people's fortunes — or even misfortunes — over the course of several weeks or months. With Alter Ego, Fox invites viewers to see an alternate reality of sorts, where music lovers with aspirations of fame (or maybe infamy) can live out their grandest dreams through an avatar that allows their imagination to soar — all in front of the world. It's a strange but certainly unique idea for a show, and one that could repeat the odd and unlikely success of Fox's ongoing fan favorite, The Masked Singer.

Alter Ego’s Judge Panel Includes Alanis Morissette, Grimes, will.i.am, And Nick Lachey

Fox has lofty expectations with this new reality competition series, and that's apparent from Alter Ego's all-star judge panel. Seated at the table are Alanis Morissette, Grimes, will.i.am, and Nick Lachey, providing an eclectic variety of musicians for this unique reality series. More specifically, Morisette is mostly known for her best-selling album, Jagged Little Pill, Grimes is a genre-defying artist with five distinct albums to her name, will.i.am is the artist best known for founding and leading the Black Eyed Peas, and Lachey was a member of 98 Degrees who found fame through his infamous marriage with Jessica Simpson and their MTV reality series, Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. Hopefully, the diversity of their styles will result in a wide-ranging wealth of insights.

Rocsi Diaz - Entertainment Tonight

The New Competition Show Is Hosted By Rocsi Diaz

At the forefront of Fox's newest competition show is Rocsi Diaz, a television and radio personality who's best known as the co-host of BET's 106 & Park. Additionally, Diaz was a correspondent on Entertainment Tonight for two years and she was the host of VH1's Dating Naked. Currently, she co-hosts USA's competition series, Cannonball, and she keeps herself busy with plenty of other projects. Certainly, if Alter Ego finds the same success as The Masked Singer or American Idol, it's easy to see this brand new show becoming Diaz's most high-profile credit yet — even with two decades of TV experience.

Alter Ego Comes From Dancing With The Stars Executive Producer Matilda Zoltowski

Matilda Zoltwoski might not be a name you recognize, but you've certainly seen her work — especially if you love competition shows. Most notably, she was a co-executive producer on ABC's Dancing with the Stars. More recently, Zoltowski became a writer and executive producer behind NBC's World of Dance. Her other TV credits include Bring the Funny, The Taste, and Betty White's Off Their Rockers, to name a few credits. Now, Zoltwoski leads the charge of this intriguing, almost inexplicable singing series.

Grimes Interview harper's bazaar 2020

Grimes Has A Lot To Say About This Show’s Concept

Grimes has a unique perspective on the music industry and the world-at-large, to say the very least. The singular singer-songwriter is known to combine many different sounds and diverging styles into her music, producing original work that's not beholden to any one genre. Likewise, the artist doesn't believe we need to be "bound by [our] age or gender" or even our bodies in order to live out our musical fantasies. Certainly, Alter Ego wants to test what's possible when it comes to fulfilling one's musical aspirations in a non-traditional manner, and Grimes believes that this reality show might welcome us to a "new reality" where we can "live out the potential of our brains." Hmm... Certainly, Grimes has very lofty ambitions for this show; we'll see if they're lived out soon enough.

Here's what Grimes told Billboard:

No one has a body, and no one is bound by their age or gender or anything like that. I’ve been really enjoying that, because we’ve lived in a society for so long where you’re stuck in the shell that you’re in, and you just have to deal with it. We might be about to enter a new reality where we can all live to the potential of our brains. As a woman in the industry, I don’t give a fuck about how I look. I hate thinking about that. I literally don’t care, and it takes so much time, and it’s expensive. We could really democratize things. All of these things give me a lot of optimism about the future.

Alter Ego’s Teaser Shows Us The World’s First Avatar Singing Competition Series

For better or worse, Alter Ego is the type of show that you need to see to believe. It's hard to contextualize what exactly this ambitious new competition series is gonna be, and this teaser only gives us a vague idea of what we'll see in this out-of-body musical reality competition series. When the upcoming show premieres this fall, we'll have a much better understanding of its premise, style, and tone, but for now, you can get an intriguing (and admittedly sorta perplexing) early glimpse in the baffling promo below:

Alter Ego will premiere on September 22 on Fox.
