Dancing with the Stars has a tendency to make its celebrities look fit and capable, but often the celebrities who commit to the grueling pace of the weekly dance activities end up getting injured. Some of these injuries are small enough that the dancers can tough it out, but occasionally contestants will have to take a week off or even drop out of the competition because of problems incurred on the show. Unfortunately, Season 22 contestant Ginger Zee seems to be dealing with an injury at an inopportune time. Reports this week indicate that the Good Morning America meteorologist may miss the special finale episode this week.
Over the weekend, reports started to surface indicating that Ginger Zee was dealing with a fairly serious injury. She hurt her pelvis while practicing a contemporary routine with her partner Val Chmerkovskiy. Apparently, the injury has led her to have back spasms which may keep her from competing in the finale, which airs live on Monday on ABC.
The whole things sounds pretty horrific. Ginger Zee told ABC News that her entire pelvis had shifted while competing on Dancing with the Stars.
By Wednesday, I went to see a physical therapist for the show, Gina [Minchella], and she said my pelvis was forward and an inch off. I came back the next day, and [my pelvis] was backward and an inch the other way. My pelvis was just moving all over.
Yahoo is also noting that the injury has kept Zee from practicing this week. Instead, Dancing with the Stars professional dancer Jenna Johnson has been standing in for the meteorologist during rehearsals, so the camera blocking could be accomplished. Zee was practicing just a few days ago but has stopped in the interim. Neither the network nor Ginger Zee herself have confirmed whether or not she will be available tonight.
Even if Ginger Zee does perform, she has lost out on a lot of practice time, plus she will have some stiff competition in the finale. If she is able to show up and compete on the ABC competition this week, the finale will see her square off against Nyle DiMarco and Paige VanSant, who have both been extremely strong competitors through all of Season 22. Beyond that, neither of the other two competitors have missed out on practice time this week. That puts the injured Ginger Zee at an even further disadvantage. But contestants have been known to rise up and still pull out all the stops while injured before.
We’ll let you know whether or not Ginger Zee ends up signing on for the Dancing with the Stars finale. It airs tonight at 8 p.m. ET, only on ABC. To see what else ABC has coming up this summer, feel free to check out our summer TV premiere schedule.
