Girls Preview: Episode 5 - Hard Being Easy

One of the things I've noticed about HBO's Girls is that, regardless of whether or not I love what happened in the episode, it always ends with me having a mind full of thoughts and opinions. It helped that last night's episode ended with a whopper of a deliciously awkward moment, thanks to Hannah's diary… which also happened to be the episode title.

Hannah's ridiculous eyebrows made the episode for me, as she spent half the day dealing with her problems with strangely overdrawn brows. Between her handsy boss and her non-boyfriend's penis-pic, the episode was full of drama for the series lead. But nothing could top having her diary read on stage as part of a musical performance by her best friend's boyfriend and his friend. Of course, that was probably worse for Marnie, who was practically stage-dumped during the ordeal. From the preview below, it looks like Marnie's taking her anger out on her friend. (Because it's Hannah's fault Charlie let Ray snoop invade her privacy?)

Naturally, it seems like Hannah is more concerned over what they thought of the writing, rather than how her words are affecting their lives.

On that subject, I'm fascinated by Marnie's relationship with Charlie because it feels like a realistic situation. She has no reason not to love him and she knows it… yet she can't seem to bring herself to want him. It's a tricky situation and it seems like we could be looking at the beginning of the end for these two.

My theory: Marnie might leave him (or he'll leave her over this diary business) or she'll cheat on him and it'll end messy. And maybe at some point in the future (distant or not), after she's distanced herself from the relationship and gotten hurt once or twice by guys who are far less appreciative of or careful with her heart, she'll regret how things ended with Charlie and wish she had him or someone like him in her life. And maybe Charlie will move on and find someone who does love him, or he'll be so hurt that he has a hard time opening up to anyone for a while.

Whether or not things play out that way, it doesn't change the fact that right now, at this part of Marnie's life, she doesn't love him and she wants something else (anything else). Like I said… it's tricky. It's also frustrating to watch, and all the more entertaining for it. From the above preview, it seems like Charlie's trying to make Marnie admit she doesn't love him. Will she do it? Or is she still not ready to let go?

Girls airs Sunday at 10:30 p.m. ET on HBO.
