Ah, the Golden Globes, how we missed you. One of the things I love about the Golden Globes award ceremony is how much more laid back it is as compared to The Oscars and The Emmys. Rather than lining up the celebrities in rowed seats, the GG’s offer food and drink to the nominees and allow film and tv stars and industry people to mingle in the same room. It’s fine Hollywood fun and it definitely makes for an entertaining awards ceremony, even for people like me who haven’t seen most of the movies and a few of the TV shows featured on the nominees list.
Here’s my little list of favorite moments from the 2009 Golden Globe Awards Ceremony:
Don Cheadle talking about crushing Fargo if he’d been in it and then insinuating that Brad Pitt is very ordinary and dumb.
Ricky Gervais, demonstrating once again that he should be the host of all awards shows because he's hilarious. He stopped during his presentation to remind Kate Winslet that he told her if she did a holocaust movie, the awards would start coming in.
Sally Hawkins’ teary and heartfelt speech when accepting her award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
As unsurprising as it was that Heath Ledger won for his supporting role in The Dark Knight, Chris Nolan’s acceptance speech on Ledger’s behalf was very eloquent.
During his award presentation, Colin Farrell sniffles and says, “I still have a cold. It’s not the other thing… it used to be.”
Tracy Morgan’s ridiculous 30 Rock speech, which included thanking the crafts services taco lady before thanking the president of NBC.
Not to be outdone by her 30 Rock co-star, when accepting her acting award from the comedy series, Tina Fey also brought the laughs when she addressed the internet haters. If you don’t like her, “You can suck it.”
Steven Spielberg’s Cecil B. DeMille award. Spielberg shared some childhood memories that he had related to Cecil B. Demille’s movies. I only heard part of the speech because I was too busy thinking about my own childhood memories related to Spielberg’s movies.
Colin Farrell’s very humble speech when he accepted his Best Actor award for In Bruges. He seemed very nervous up there and even laughed at himself for almost forgetting to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press.
Sasha Baron Cohen making off color jokes related to some Hollywood elites, including joking about Charlie Sheen and prostitutes and mentioning that Madonna had to let go of one of her personal assistants, “Our thoughts go out to you, Guy Ritchie.” What was even funnier was watching the pans of the celebs in the audience either trying not to react or else looking disapproving while the people in the cheap seats could be heard chuckling in the background.
Kate Winslett’s “Thank you, so much.” speech for her award for Revolutionary Road. How could you not be happy for the woman for walking away with two acting awards in the same night?
Rainn Wilson introducing himself and Blake Lively as TV actors, in case all of the movie people didn’t recognize them.
Darren Aronofsky flipping Mickey Rourke off on camera. So much for tape delay. Does sign language apply to FCC regulations?
