The MTV Scream Trailer Is Worth Watching, Also May Have Been Shot In 1996

Wes Craven’s Scream quadrilogy is one of the most popular and successful horror franchises to ever exist, and MTV is trying to keep the thrills alive with their upcoming TV series take on the well-worn “killer in a mask” tropes. They’ve released the first trailer for it, and it looks less like a new Scream project and more like the line of films that followed the original, like I Know What You Did Last Summer. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t dying to see what it'll bring to the small screen. Check it out!

You thought I was kidding about that Last Summer crack, didn’t you? But no. This version of Scream most certainly involves someone doing something terrible in the past that comes back to haunt them and everyone else in the town of Lakewood. The trailer doesn’t really give too much of a sense of what the show will be about, beyond a lineup of good looking people getting picked off by a masked murderer, mixed in with a healthy dose of self-awareness. “You can’t do a slasher movie as a TV series,” and whatnot.

And the biggest question on everyone’s minds is almost certainly “What does this mask look like?” Ever since it was announced that the developers would be leaving out the Ghost Face mask, speculation about what audiences can expect has been pretty widespread. We get a small glimpse of it in the trailer, although it’s hard to tell if it’s all that grounded and evolved, which is how MTV’s senior vice president Mina Lefevre described it last year.

Here’s what we do know about it. Bex Taylor-Klaus’ Aubrey Jensen made some kind of a video – presumably a sexy one – that went viral, bringing about much shame…and murder. Someone dies in the aftermath, which leads to a ton of the town’s dark secrets coming to light. (That image of the misshapen face was particularly creepy.) The cast of libidinous teens also includes Willa Fitzgerald, Carlson Young and John Karna. You might have also noticed Bella Thorne in there, and she’ll be at the center of the reimagining of the iconic Drew Barrymore opening from the original film.

Oddly enough, the trailer begins and ends with deadly moments in water, with the first part being a nice little gross-out gag in a hot tub, and the final bit looking like it was taken from the 2009 Friday the 13th remake. But it's nothing to lose your head over just yet.

Scream will make its splatteriffic debut on MTV on Tuesday, June 30.
