Starz Moving Forward With Spartacus Blood And Sand Season 2

There’s good news for those of you who have been holding out hope that Spartacus: Blood and Sand will get a second season. Starz announced today that they’re moving ahead with Season 2. That’s the good news…

Most of the bad news, you probably already know. Andy Whitfield will no longer be playing the title role due to his unfortunate cancer diagnosis. Whitfield’s illness delayed production for Season 2 and since he’s unable to return to work, Starz is now looking to recast. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Starz CEO and president Chris Albercht says they’re close to concluding the casting process for the title role. He didn’t specify who was in the running for the part but he did say that they hope to start production on Season 2 in the spring. Unfortunately, we probably won’t see it air until 2012.

That may seem like long wait and after numerous rewatches of Season 1, I’m as anxious as ever to see how freedom suits our hero and his new potential ally. Fortunately, we do have Gods of the Arena, the prequel series set to premiere later this month (January 21st!) to tide us over.
