MGM’s financial troubles have put all of their existing movie properties in jeopardy. If you haven’t been keeping up with their cash flow woes, educate yourself here. Luckily, they only really had two current franchises to worry about (maybe that's why they're in trouble). Those two were The Hobbit and James Bond.
The Hobbit has already been taken care of, with an infusion of cash from Warner Bros., but James Bond still hangs in limbo. Will we get a follow up to Quantum of Solace? The answer it would seem, is yep. We Are Movie Geeks says they have a source who tells them 20th Century Fox is parachuting in and taking over the future of James Bond.
Fox isn’t new to the James Bond game, before Sony took over distribution and marketing on Casino Royale, they’d been in charge of getting the Bond franchise in front of your eyes. Now word is that they’ll get back in the game, and handle the distribution and marketing of Bond 23, for cash-strapped MGM.
Frankly, I’m not sure I believe it. You’d think Sony, who purchased MGM back in 2004, would have the inside track here and with as profitable as the Daniel Craig powered Bond movies have been, it’s hard to believe they’d let Fox dip their fingers in. It makes a lot more sense for Sony to back up Bond while MGM fights its way out of a financial sleeper hold. Still, We Are Movie Geeks insists this is the real deal and claims there should be official word any day. Until there is, consider this rumor.
UPDATE! MGM contacted us tonight to let us know the above rumor is completely untrue. Full details here.
