Harry Potter 8 Possible?

By Josh Tyler: 2008-01-14 00:28:29
Harry Potter 8 Possible? The books may have stopped at number seven, but it looks like the Harry Potter movies may make it all the way to number 8. The Daily Mail claims that they’ve heard from the crew working on Harry Potter 6 that the seventh book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is being split up into two, separate films.

With as much money as the Potter films have made for Warner Brothers it’s no surprise that they’d want to drag this thing out as long as they can. It’s not all that different from New Line Cinema’s plans for their impending movie-version of The Hobbit, which they’re stretching out into two films. In the case of The Hobbit, it’s a somewhat baffling decision since the book itself probably doesn’t warrant it. I haven’t read Rowling's seventh book, so I’ll have to leave to you Potter-heads to tell me whether or not there’s enough material in Deathly Hallows to warrant this. The Mail’s sources say it’s being done for artistic reasons, but then that’s what Hollywood always says whenever they’re doing something in order to buy another mansion.

Buying one of those Potter funded mansions may be Spielberg, who The Mail claims may be one of the people up to direct it. Well, they sort of claim it. What they actually say is that the WB is “rumoured to be thinking of Oscars and a big-name director such as Steven Spielberg for the final film.” A rumor which they started. A director “such as Steven Spielberg” really could mean just about anything, from Michael Bay to Guillermo del Toro to… shudder… the return of Christopher Columbus. Spielberg on the other hand, is usually pretty busy.

I doubt you'll hear many complaints from Potter fans. Speaking for myself, having read all of the books a number of times, I'd be happy if the final book were split in two. The last quarter of the book is filled with so much action, suspense, build-up and overall payoff (for those of us who were waiting years to find out how it all ends) that I would hate to see them rush through it in the movies.

The only concern I have is that the seventh book does feel a bit top-heavy. It's not bad for the book (because like I said, the huge ending is the payoff we were all waiting for) but if they were to divide the story in half I'm not sure how great the first movie would be. It will be interesting to see how they divide the story and whether or not they're able to make both halves somewhat self-contained.

  1. Kris Says:

I disagree entirely, I think theres a lot in the book that can be compressed and still give plenty of time for the really important stuff.

  1. Katey Says:

Yeah, I was excited for the seventh movie because there's so much of the book that could be compressed-- hello, endless camping trip! On the other hand, the movies have never given a fair shake to most of the action in the books, so it'd be nice to give Harry time to contemplate a major event instead of immediately moving on to the next thing-- hello, Sirius' death!

As long as they include "Not my daughter, you bitch!", I'm good to go.

  1. dindhi Says:

they haven't made a decent one since prisoner of azkaban so they can turn it into a trilogy for all i care, i'm sure it'll still be rubbish!

  1. Brett Says:

i think all the movies were rushed as are most movies made from books they can never make a movie as good as your own imaginanation and i dont think theyll be two movies because they left out so much crap already they probaly dont care same as lord of the rings or eragon they just make it crappy when they make a movie

  1. chad Says:

i think that making a seventh on book would make better sence for kids to understand about what happens in the book.

  1. John Says:

Yea I was really dissapointed when I watched the first movie. The book was so much more detailed and they cut out a lot in the first movie. I would really like it if they split the movie. It would make it so much more better. Or they should split it into 2 parts like the titanic or something 3hours long or w/e.

  1. Nick Says:

I think the director should just make an extremely long 7th movie. Like 3 hours or something. I wouldn't mind sitting in a theatre for 3 hours..... besides the first part of the 7th movie would be terrible because there isn't a general ending.
I guess they could do something like the lord of the rings. Where the movie just stops when the journey isn't even close to being over. But I think this all is just a way to get money.
The recent movies are terrible anyways. If I was a movie critic the only movie that I might give a C or something would be the 3rd and 5th. I hate how the shittiest directors choose to make a movie on a brilliant book. Either way I dont care what happens.

  1. Joe G Says:

i would actually prefer they make 2 movies per book, simply because i feel they leave too much out wen they try to cram everything into 2 1/2 hours (which is still a fairly long movie). the 5th movie left so much out its hard for me to say that its a good movie, and it seems hard to follow for people who havent read the books prior to seeing the movie

  1. J.A. Says:

i didn't like the idea to make harry potter 7 two films, cause you can make 1 film for harry potter7, and another movie that it will be harry potter 8, like it is the same.

  1. peter L Says:

I think they should just make a really long movie of Harry Potter 7, just like lord of the rings 3, which was about 3 1/2 hours long. It wouldnt cut that much out. Also, they should have made the 4th really long and the 5th longer, they rushed through it all and cut out SO MUCH!!!! (the first 3 movies were fine, but the 4th and the 5th were not) They really should have done a better job of acting(on the main characters part - Snape and Umbridge were really good) and directing too. How can you get a great book like Hary Potter and use a shit director who makes the movies short???? They should have got someone like Peter Jackson to direct the Harry Potter movies.

Later on though, when the Harry Potter movies are becoming old - maybe in around 15 years time, they should make a TV series and not cut out anything because the books are so good...

  1. Jennifer Somerville Says:

I really liked all the movies but I do agree that they keeped out to much information in the movies and i really hope they keep more of the information in the next book because it is really important a real big harry potter fans have all the books and movies
    a fan from montreal quebec

  1. Yuri Says:

I do realize that from production point of view it might be more profitable for them to go forward and trunkate books to their liking. From a reader's point of view I see why book fans were disappointed. I think what needs to happen is a release of "extended" version of every single movie that contains information that was skipped out. If that is not possible then there is another very clever alternative.
Lion king the cartoon came out way back when. Lion king 1.5 came out after capturing what was happeing in the first movie but on a separate story line. So they could very well explore that possibility through that same concept.
    How about:
Harry Potter and Confessions of a House Elf
    Harry Potter and The Untold
Harry Potter and Untold Stories of Hogwarts
Harry Potter and Secrets of a Young Wizard.

    Those are just a few.

Bottom line is that you cant adapt a full book into a movie without leaving things behind and that is why book fans often think that really cool and important stuff was missed out. I am pretty sure they have a "team" that works very closely with Rowling trying really hard not to cut out all of the book and still convey the message

  1. anna Says:

im not sure wich wud b betr.. it made me so mad that they cut out so much for #5!! the quiditch thing 4 1.. ron was keeper & we missd it!! & the hole thing bout changn who duz wat (ex- dobby gav harry the gilyweed not neville(4).... & neville didnt find the room of requirment!! dobby did.. cant they giv any credit 2 house elvs!?!)

  1. Brendan Says:

Ok lets get this straight, every harry potter movie after the chamber of secrets was different and didnt follow the book as they should have. Prisoner of azkaban didnt have the part where griffindor won the quiditch cup, and they made it to where harry got the firebolt at the end when he really got it for xmas. and in the 4th one neville didnt give harry the gillyweed, dobby did, and what about ludo bagman and winky. the 5th one, well the fact is that the actors talked so fast that things just seemed to fly by. and about them splitting up the 7th movie, i think thats a great idea!!!!! see these stupid directors dont understand is that fans want to see the book come alive, not the director adding his or her little changes because THEY THINK its more interesting. this way the 7th one wont have any of the cool scenes wont get cut or skipped over.

  1. hakeriste Says:

so why don't J.K. make an eight book in which she can continue the story
with harry ron and hermione when they will have their own job and children.and instead voldemort she can make some other bad wizard like him.than they will fight against him and that story can be continued in another 5 books and so on.....

  1. Michael Says:

i actually think that every single harry potter movie should have been split into two movies the length of each book is huge and ive noticed with the movies they do leave a lot of stuff out and skip around

  1. salma Says:

i think a harry potter 8 book will be a very great idea and it can talk about Harry, Ron and Hermione taking jobs and one of voldemort's death eaters can be instead of him. It will make a great disaster in book theories.

  1. Billy Bob Jean McAndrews Supanova Says:

I agree, what the hell is with directors cutting out the best parts of the movie???? Lots happened in the fourth book and all they showed was the triwizard tournament and in the fifth book they only showed like 2 minutes of the ministry and that should of been like a 10 minute fight between voldemort *shudder* and dumbledore.

i can't really see how splitting the seventh book into two films is going to help it - viewers will be left at a brick wall, not knowing what happens and feeling ripped off, just like people who read and saw Eragon, but thats in a different spot

splitting the seventh book into two films is not good, and i think j.k.rowling needs to at least write some reference material to go with the whole "ninetenn years later" chapter, like what are they're jobs and hows everyone going, whether harry and malfoy ever talk again, and whether neville has any children etc... come on j.k, you owe us, we readers made you the millionaire/billionaire that you are today. if it weren't for us you would probably still be sitting on that train wishing you had more money to pay all the bills.

Thats the end of my rant ^_^ pip, pip!!!

  1. eileen Says:

well im not much of a reader and so is a high percent of people but i started reading harry potter and then i couldn't stop. The books are amazing there is no way another author can beat this. I'll give an applause to j.k. rowling for making the best series ever. so i think that there should be more books and movies of harry potter but i think they should split the seventh.

  1. Mike Says:

YES, MAKE 2 MOVIES. Dont just make 1 really short one.

  1. Mark Says:

I think that all the Harry Potter movies werent really explaining what was happening in the books but basically surfacing it.For someone who hasnt read the books and watching the movies he wldnt understand anything. I read all the books like 15 times each and i seriously think that they should split the 7th movie in half because there is alot of things going on and alot of things they need to make us understand and it would be sucky to finish the movies by rushing everything and not having anyone understanding what is happening. Also if they separate the movie in two they are able to put more things of the book and not pass by it as though its nothing and cut important parts like they have done before. I wanted the 6th movie to be cut in half too but unfortunately they didnt so please do it for the 7th movie because Harry Potter is the best story ever created.

  1. Evan Says:

i think it would be a horrible idea to make more harry potter novels. it's like making more starwars movies, sure people will watch but i just wont feel right.

but i do approve of the idea of splitting the last movie into two parts. but like producing both parts at the same time and releasing them like 6 months apart instead of like 2 years.

but just 1 really long movie would be a good idea too.

and if your freaking out about what happened to people individually and stuff, JK Rowling is releasing a Harry Potter encyclopedia soon
