No one doubts Hugh Jackman’s commitment to Wolverine, both the character and the franchise. The actor wasn’t the reason Gavin Hood’s origin story, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, missed the mark. And Jackman regularly appeals to fans via interviews and social media promising them the Wolverine movie they think that they deserve. Unfortunately, things keep getting in his way. But Jackman’s determined to make this next Wolverine work, and he’s even tempting true fans with a possible R-rated cut.

Speaking with MTV Rough Cut, Jackman talked about his desire for a harder Wolverine film from director James Mangold, admitting that there is “such temptation” to make an R-rated Wolverine because the rating matches the ruthless superhero:

And in this second clip, Jackman teases potentially familiar faces, while also revealing that “not all of it takes place in Japan,” as was previously believed:

However, Jackman’s savvy enough to admit in the clip that his audience base is younger than 17, and no studio in their right mind is going to alienate potential ticket buyers by delivering an R-rated, disturbing cut of a comic book character just to satisfy a small, dedicated niche. Now, that’s not to say you can’t approach mature subjects in a PG-13 film. Christopher Nolan did just that with The Dark Knight, and was rewarded with $1 billion in international grosses. So Mangold and Jackman can make this work, even with the supposed limitations of the PG-13 rating. Jackman reportedly will film The Wolverine after Les Miserables. I can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve.
