ABC's Modern Family is one of the biggest comedies on television nowadays, and it recently scored a major renewal for Seasons 9 and 10. Sarah Hyland has been a key member of the cast from the very beginning as eldest Dunphy child Haley. Hyland has been working on other projects lately, however, and she just signed on to appear on another big series. Sarah Hyland will appear on an upcoming episode of Freeform's Shadowhunters.
The summer portion of Shadowhunters Season 2 picked up over the weekend, and there are still nine episodes left before the end of the season. Freeform has not yet announced which episode will feature Sarah Hyland or what kind of character she'll be playing, but we can bet that the character will be pretty different from Haley Dunphy. Something tells me Haley wouldn't fare too well in the Shadow World. Shadowhunters will mark Hyland's second non-Modern Family role this summer, having previously appeared as Lisa Houseman in ABC's somewhat ill-advised musical Dirty Dancing remake.
After the events of the first half of Season 2, the Shadowhunters and Downworlders of Showhunters have a lot on their plates. In the aftermath of Valentine's game-changing attack on the Institute, the numbers of Downworlders are decreased, and survival methods will be fiercely debated by the various clans and packs. While the entire Institute is on high alert, Jace has an especially challenging part to play due to his action with the Soul Sword, as well as a huge secret. Unfortunately, none of the Shadowhunters have time to mourn or heal as they must face greater threats on the loose.
Shadowhunters has been a significant hit as an original series for Freeform, which has struggled with originals in the past. The 13-episode first season of Shadowhunters back in 2016 did well enough that a 20-episode second season was ordered, and the series has since been ordered for a third season. With the ends of Pretty Little Liars and Switched At Birth, Shadowhunters may be an especially valuable commodity moving forward.
Freeform does have promising series like Marvel's Cloak and Dagger and the Black-ish spinoff in the works, but only time will tell how successful they'll be. Who knows? If all goes well with Sarah Hyland's appearance on Shadowhunters (and assuming her character doesn't die), maybe she could appear more regularly on Freeform. We'll have to wait and see.
