Shrek will become dated, Shrek is nothing but fart jokes, Pixar's stuff is better... so what? I like fart jokes, I like material produced for a specific time, and I like Pixar's stuff, but that doesn't mean someone else can't do what they do and maybe even do it better.

Did Shrek do it better? That's open to opinion. What it did do was do fairy tales different. Shrek took shots at the genre and came out on top. For my money, that made it one of the very best movies of 2002.

It also made a truckload of cash, which means DreamWorks is of course firing up a sequel. The latest teaser showcases it as a Shrek version of Meet the Parents with all the original cast returning to voice their characters as the newly married Shrek and Fiona head off to meet her folks. I hope they like donkeys.

Joining the original cast (will the Gingerbread Man make a cameo at the dinner table?) is the comedic genius of John Cleese. He replaces Farquad (who is also in the second film) as King Harold, Shrek's big bad (well Farquad wasn't exactly big, but he was bad) king. Also new to the cast is Puss-in-Boots (Antonio Banderas), a swashbuckling tabby with a soft fuzzy coat and a sharp looking pair of galoshes. Personally, I think their best casting choice thus far has been to cast Larry King as the Ugly Stepsister. What must they have paid to get him to agree to that???

Where all these new characters fit in is uncertain, but the first teaser trailer, in addition to a fairly funny Meet the Parents parody, gives us a taste of Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), arriving more than a little late to rescue Princess Fiona from her Dragon guarded castle. I imagine Fiona's parents might have prefered him as a suitor. It can't be easy cleaning after a gigantic green ogre.

As much as I loved the first, it's going to be difficult to keep the laughs going. Hasn't Shrek already taken all the shots there are to take at the land of fairy tales? To make Shrek 2 work, the brilliant crew over at DreamWorks is going to have to surprise us with something more than a fairly funny feline. Their teaser proclaims that they just might be ready to do it.
