Rumor: Wii Successor Being Announced At E3 2011

We're only two months away from E3 and you know what that means: it's time for another Wii 2 rumor. The latest gossip says Nintendo will announce an HD console during their E3 press conference, if not sooner.

Game Informer heard from multiple sources that the new system will launch in late 2012. While it is going to be HD, there's some disagreement as to whether the graphics will be on par with the PS3 or Xbox 360. To build up third-party support for the console, Nintendo has already started to show it off to publishers.

"Nintendo is doing this one right. [It's] not a gimmick like the Wii," said one of GI's sources. I'm not sure you can really argue they screwed up with Wii, given the sales they racked up. However, I assume this means that Nintendo's going to try to make the next system a bit more hardcore gamer-friendly.

This rumor comes a day after word of a possible Wii price cut. As I said yesterday, the two rumors work well together. Once the Wii's successor is announced, the Wii's going to become less desirable ("Why buy a Wii? The next one's coming out next year!") so Nintendo will resort to a price cut to keep the sales going.
