Earth’s mightiest heroes have assembled for a teaser poster… with an emphasis on the letter “A.”

Even though we are more than a year away from Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, the hype machine for the star-studded, multi-hero tent pole is in full gear. In fact, some could argue that the amount of Avengers news that has flooded the Web this week – from rumors of a teaser trailer to reports of filming in a NASA location – have overshadowed the campaign to properly kick-start this weekend’s Captain America origin story (which is a shame, because Joe Johnston’s period adventure is pretty terrific).

But with Comic-Con officially underway, and with Cap properly setting the stage for Whedon’s effort, Marvel decided this was a great time to release a shiny new (but relatively bland) poster. We have it below:

Just in case you didn’t know that Avengers started with the letter “A.”

This is fine and all, but we really need to feast our eyes on the trailer that reportedly will be the post-credit sequence on Johnston’s film this weekend. (It wasn’t tacked on to the end of our press screening earlier this week, much to the dismay of the preview crowd who stayed through a VERY long credit list). And while it can be found online with a little bit of digging, I prefer to wait for the high-definition version in much the same way that the Amazing Spider-Man trailer played much better once Sony unleashed it and overshadowed the bootlegged copy that was making the rounds.

Until the official clip reaches our computers, we have a poster. And likely more hype. And maybe a better poster somewhere down the line. Because we have a long way to go until Whedon’s Avengers actually assembles in theaters on May 4, 2012.
