Could Deadpool Appear In An Upcoming X-Men Movie?

In case it wasn’t already clear, Deadpool is quite a bit different than all of the other heroes in the X-Men universe. While Professor X and his team are noble people busy trying to create a stronger bond between mutants and humans – often saving the world in the process – the Merc With The Mouth is far more selfish, sociopathic, violent and foul-mouthed. This has led some to ponder whether or not the R-rated DP would fit into a PG-13 film about the uncanny squad… but in the minds of Deadpool writers/producers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick it’s not even a question. They ‘absolutely’ think that the 4th wall-breaking assassin should team up with the X-Men in the near future.

With Deadpool now in theaters and experiencing massive success, I hopped on the phone with the two filmmakers earlier this week, and during our long conversation about the movie and the future we touched on the subject of future franchise integration. Curious how things could work going forward, I asked Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick if they could foresee a future where Deadpool would be featured in a PG-13 X-Men movie – and while they couldn’t comment on any concrete plans for the future, they would love to see it happen. As Wernick explained,

Absolutely. I mean absolutely, as much we could see X-Men [characters] in the Deadpool universe, we could see Deadpool in the X-Men universe. And we even have some fun ideas about that. That’s more [a] Simon Kinberg question. He’s the keeper of the X-Men universe, but in terms of like, ‘Could he pop he up in, you know, you know, any of the upcoming X-Men movies?’ Absolutely. As long as it’s done right, I think we would embrace it.

Given the amount of bloodshed in Deadpool, and the fact that characters in the film say variations of the word "Fuck" more than 80 times, it’s reasonable to wonder how the rapidly-healing mercenary could be featured in more family-friendly fare without his core essence being betrayed. One option to avoid this that I offered to Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick was the possibility of Deadpool continuing to curse, but also being bleeped each time (much to his frustration). Reese revealed that they’ve had similar thoughts about Deadpool’s future, saying,

That’s a great idea, yeah. We’ve been thinking along those lines, because he’s almost trapped in a PG-13 movie. It’s a fun idea.

Would you like to see Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool eventually find his way into a PG-13 blockbuster with the X-Men, or would you rather see Deadpool stick to his R-rated world and have the franchise move more in that direction? Hit the comments section with your thoughts!
