Jane Austen Takes On Sci-Fi... Again

This can't really be happening, can it? Mere days after Pride And Prejudice And Zombies gets lined up for a movie adaptation, another movie that pits Jane Austen vs. sci-fi is coming down the pipeline.

And while Natalie Portman is responsible for the zombies version as producer, it's Elton John we have to blame for the new one. Variety reports that the singer's Rocket pictures will produce Pride and Predator, a movie in which aliens crash land into Austen's 18th-century novel. Will Clark, who previously made the short The Amazing Trousers will direct, and he wrote the script with Andrew Kemble and John Pope.

David Furnish, one of the producers, had this PR pitch for Variety: "It felt like a fresh and funny way to blow apart the done-to-death Jane Austen genre by literally dropping this alien into the middle of a costume drama, where he stalks and slashes to horrific effect."

Yeah... except this "fresh and funny" idea is already being done by another book, soon to be another movie. Is there really enough room in this world for two movies about monsters in mannered England? Or is one of them going to have to fall by the wayside eventually? I really wouldn't want to place bets in a John vs. Portman matchup, especially since no one has a clue what they're like as producers. So we really just have to pick between aliens and zombies. I'm going for zombies.
