Master Chief the Movie

Though Halo 2 isn’t much different than the first, it’s still a damn good game. Of course so was the first Halo. With people lined up outside game stores by the hundreds and sales on Halo 2 through the roof, I guess it should be no surprise for any of us to hear there’s talk of a Halo movie. Fortunately, Bungie isn’t willing to talk to Uwe Boll.

Instead, according to the rumor published this morning by Aint-It-Cool-News, Warner Brothers is meeting with Bungie to discuss movie rights. Bungie’s response? “Unless you [get] the writer and director of the original ALIEN, everyone can go fish.”

It’s a relief to hear that Bungie isn’t willing to settle for just anyone to adapt their property. That sort of attitude might just result in the first decent videogame adaptation to date. Halo certainly has enough story for it, especially if they base the film on the first game, with all its twists and turns.

The sticky point though, according to AICN is that Ridley Scott has already passed. With the massive sales of Halo 2 will he reconsider? Would Bungie budge enough to get another great director on board, maybe James Cameron? I’m not sure why they are so slavish about only talking to Ridley, though being overly picky about who they hand their property over to can’t be a bad thing, particularly where game adaptations are concerned.

Wherever this thing ends up, it’s an interesting rumor and the first I’ve heard of anyone legitimately talking about making a movie out of the XBox’s premiere videogame. Granted, it borrows heavily from a lot of existing movies like Alien or Starship Troopers (I’ve always seen more Heinlein than Ridley Scott in it), but making Halo a movie could be an opportunity to actually make Starship Troopers right. Heck, the cut scenes for the game are already better than most of the crappy sci-fi we've been getting lately. Keep up that quality and translate it to a movie and I think you've got something.
