Michel Gondry Will Mess With Your Water Supply

Be Kind Rewind hasn’t even hit theaters yet—it opens later this month—but it’s already time to get pumped about Michel Gondry’s next mind-bending movie. He revealed to MTV Movies that his next project will be called The Return of the Ice Kings, and—get this—it’s going to be strange and bend the rules of science. Whoah!

Why don’t we let the eccentric, brilliant Frenchman speak for himself: “I’m writing a story about kids who invent a water that makes you hear music when you drink it. It’s going to be a scientific story, but completely unrealistic.” Sounds great to us. If you remember, this is the man who brought us Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which was unscientific but completely realistic in the way it invented memory-erasing technology. He pulled it off beautifully there, and there’s no reason to believe he couldn’t do it again.

There’s no word on whether or not Be Kind Rewind is any good, and I was among those disappointed by The Science of Sleep, but every project that Gondry announces sounds so special and potentially groundbreaking that you have to give the guy the benefit of the doubt anyway. And the idea of him working with children could work, even though it wasn’t that great in the “Hey Mama” video he did for Kanye West. Like I said, benefit of the doubt. If we don’t have Michel Gondry, who else will be around to blow our minds?
