Ocean's Thirteen?

The concept of diminishing returns is something studio executives have never quite mastered. With that in mind Jerry Weintraub has just picked up a script for Ocean's Thirteen; that's the third installment of Ocean's Eleven "franchise" for those who can't quite work it out.

He is now planning the movie with Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney and hope to start filming later this year.

There are no more details at the moment but it begs the question; in a world of troubled box office returns, is another movie with at least half a dozen or more stars all demanding $10,000,000+ with no guaranteed box office profit really what Hollywood needs right now? Despite critical praise, Eleven made some (but not spectacular) money domestically and Twelve barely broke even while opening to mixed reviews.

We've just left behind a year plagued by money-pit sequels and remakes nobody asked for or particularly liked. It seems studios have abandoned any concept of a New Year's Resolution to learn from the mistakes 2005 presented.

Expect "piracy" and "changing consumer habits" to continue to take the blame for poor reviews and box office receipts for some time to come.
