Well, folks, the final Ranger has been has been found. After a brief break from the casting announcements last week, the 2017 Power Rangers movie announced that singer Becky Gomez, better known by the stage name Becky G, has been recruited to play the Yellow Ranger. Take a look at the latest actor who will portray one of the spandex-wearing, monster-fighting teenagers with attitude.
The official Power Rangers Instagram account made the announcement today that Gomez will be "bringing the action" as the new Yellow Ranger. She joins a cast that consists of Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger, Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger, Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger, and RJ Cyler as the Blue Ranger.
Gomez’s casting rounds out the core team of five, although depending on the direction Power Rangers is going, we may see a sixth casting for the Green Ranger in the near future. Saban and Lionsgate haven’t released any information regarding details about her or the other Rangers, but Gomez’s Yellow Ranger will reportedly be the "new kid" who is a self-sufficient loner, but longs to find a close group of friends.
Over the last several weeks, there had been conflicting rumors over whether the movie would be a reboot of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV series or something that takes place in the same continuity as the other shows. In the latter's case, it was reported by other outlets that although the movie's Rangers would have the same Zords as the original Rangers, they would be new characters. However, the Power Rangers social media accounts posted soon after Gomez's casting that this movie will indeed be a reboot, so Gomez's Trini will be fighting alongside new versions of Jason, Kimberly, Billy and Zack.
As Becky G, Gomez has made a name for herself as a pop star since 2011, and her 2014 song, "Shower," was her first top 20 hit in the United States. Acting-wise, she is currently recurring as Valentina Galindo in the Fox series Empire and also appeared as herself earlier this year in the Disney Channel series Austin & Ally. Although she’s still young in her acting career, Gomez is much more famous than her costars, all of whom are unknowns. No doubt if the Power Rangers movie is successful, this will see her being eyed for other big roles in the following years.
Gomez’s Yellow Ranger will morph into action with her teammates when the Power Rangers movie hits theaters on January 13, 2017.
