Yesterday we got our first look at the character poster for the hero of Les Miserables, Hugh Jackman's Jean Valjean. But every great hero needs a great villain to bounce off of, and now the baddie has arrived with the character poster for Inspector Javert, who will be played by Russell Crowe in this December's adaptation of the hit musical. Take a look below:
You can tell from the release date that this is a UK poster, since Les Miserables is set for a December 25 release over here-- the poster comes from Empire. You can take a look at Hugh Jackman's poster, which was unlocked through a fan viral game, below.
Pretty similar setups, and relatively familiar for teaser posters-- emphasize the famous faces with a an intriguing tagline and leave you asking for more. But if you look at the way the eyes are photographed, especially Crowe's, there's clearly something a little special going on, and reminiscent of the way director Tom Hooper got up close and very personal with his actors in The King's Speech, for which he won a Best Director Oscar. Les Miserables is Hooper's follow-up to that massively successful film, but even though it's also a period piece with a famous cast, it's going to be a much bigger challenge.
As we've seen in this behind-the-scenes featurette, Hooper is having all of his actors sing their songs live on the set, rather than lip-synch to tracks recorded in a studio, which is the standard procedure for musicals. It ought to add a fascinating wrinkle to a story most of us know very well, and really prove the singing chops of stars like Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Sacha Baron Cohen, and yes, Jackman and Crowe. We can't wait to see Les Miserables when it emerges this winter-- how about you?
