Sally Hawkins Wants Sex! And Equality!

Sally Hawkins may not have pulled off an Oscar nomination for her breakthrough role in Happy-Go-Lucky, but she's the one having the last laugh. She's signed on for a lead role in yet another movie that sounds guaranteed to be quality British stuff. She doesn't need your American awards! She'll keep her talent on her home shores, thank you very much!

Plus, Hawkins's new movie lends itself to great jokey titles. It's called We Want Sex, but actually has a fairly serious subject. It follows the true story of a group of female auto industry employees who went on strike in 1968 to protest sex discrimination in their workplace. Variety says that Imelda Staunton is also in negotiations to star, which means Hawkins would have plenty to talk about with her co-star; they've both starred in films for Mike Leigh, which gives them a particularly unique experience as actors.

Simon Curtis, who directed the acclaimed British miniseries Cranford, will be helming this one, from a script by Billy Ivory. They'll have their hands full with such talented actresses like Hawkins and Staunton, but if everyone's up to the challenge, this could be something really great.
