New Star Wars Fan Trailer Shows How Cool An Obi-Wan Kenobi Spinoff Movie Would Be

In addition to the main Star Wars trilogy that began last year with The Force Awakens, Disney and Lucasfilm are releasing standalone "Anthology" spinoff movies to the masses every other year. This December will bring Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and in 2018, fans will see a young Han Solo lead his own movie. There's a third spinoff slated for 2020, Lucasfilm has yet to reveal what it will be about. One of the most common guesses/pieces of speculation out there is that it could feature Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi, and a new fan trailer gives us an interesting idea of what that might look like.

Using footage from Ewan McGregor's movie Last Days in the Desert, where he played Jesus, Vimeo user Rich Williamson put together an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie that explores his time on Tatooine in the years after his fight with Anakin Skywalker. Accompanied by that classic John Williams music and some snippets from Revenge of the Sith, we see the Jedi Master coming to terms with his new life in the Empire era. The Biblical setting works excellently as a stand-in for the Star Wars franchise's most famous desert planet (sorry, Jakku), and there's even a cool moment where a Star Destroyer is inserted into the shot. The trailer concludes with a brief cameo from Force ghost Qui-Gon Jinn, and if the Obi-Wan movie does happen, Liam Neeson's presence is mandatory!

While Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the most important characters in the first six movies, his time on Tatooine is mostly shrouded in mystery. The main Star Wars comic book from Marvel has told some short tales of his time there, but that's the extent of the exploration in the new, official canon. As Star Wars fans know, Obi-Wan decided to remain on Tatooine to look after Luke and make sure he was safe from the Empire. He also used this time to continue his Force training, which is how he was able to live on as a spirit after being struck down in A New Hope. He was on Tatooine for 19 years, so surely he got into at least one movie-worthy adventure during that time.

Despite the lack of official word on what the future holds in store for Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ewan McGregor has expressed interest in reprising the character. Since 11 years have passed since Revenge of the Sith, he's at the right age to play an older and more grizzled Jedi Master. McGregor had a voice cameo last year in The Force Awakens during Rey's vision, which was accompanied by edited audio from the original Obi-Wan, Alec Guinness.

It remains to be seen whether the third Star Wars Anthology movie will star Obi-Wan Kenobi or someone else, but fans can look forward to seeing it sometime in 2020.
