Kids who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s had a wide variety of shape shifting robot cartoons to watch. However, nothing induces nostalgia quite like Voltron: Defender of the Universe. The classic cartoon has become a standard point of reference in the annals of science fiction history, and it now seems that it's going to make a glorious return to contemporary pop culture. Get ready, Voltron fans, because we've just learned that there's a live-action Voltron movie currently in development.
According to a brand new report from Deadline, it seems that a live-action Voltron movie is now definitely in development. The property was recently acquired by Universal, and the studio has now put the project into development with an unspecified release date. Very few other details have come forward about the project, but the very fact that there's definitely a live-action Voltron movie on the way is reason enough to start celebrating.
The announcement of a live-action Voltron movie appears to coincide with an overall resurgence in popularity for the classic brand. In addition to the upcoming silver screen adventure, Voltron also came back to the small screen earlier this year with Netflix's Voltron: Legendary Defender. In an era defined by franchises that completely capitalize on our collective nostalgia for the 1980s and 1990s, there's certainly a place for a brand new Voltron franchise.
It's actually somewhat surprising that a live-action Voltron movie has taken this long to materialize. Between the current abundance of superhero movies and the growing prominence of nostalgia-based franchises like Power Rangers, we generally would've expected this project to happen much sooner. Even Michael Bay's Transformers series will turn 10-years-old in 2017.
From a creative standpoint, the live-action Voltron movie appears to be in some fairly deft hands for now. With screenwriter David Hayter working on the film's script, we can generally expect it to play to the tastes of die-hard fan boys while still maintaining a strong degree of mainstream appeal. Hayter has writing credits on the first two X-Men movies, as well as Watchmen, so he very clearly has a knack for distilling dense source material down to its core elements. On a side note, he's also the voice of Solid Snake from the Metal Gear Solid franchise, which means that he knows a thing or two about rabid fan bases.
CinemaBlend will bring you any and all relevant news related to the upcoming live-action Voltron movie as more information becomes available to us. The project does not have an official release date yet. Stay tuned for more awesome details!
