That Time Chris Hemsworth Got Marvel To Shoot 45 Minutes From His House

The third Thor film is heading into theaters next month, but it's easy to skip over the fact that Chris Hemsworth has been in films beyond the Thor movies when thinking about the character. In fact, by the time Thor: Ragnarok was coming together, Hemsworth had already filmed quite a few movies for Marvel, including Avengers flicks and even a cameo for Doctor Strange. Thus, when Thor: Ragnarok was in development, the actor realized he had probably built up some leverage and smartly negotiated to get things done a little more on his terms. He recently told Jimmy Kimmel that it was his idea to film Thor: Ragnarok in Australia, and he used a little tactic he'd learned from Robert Downey, Jr. to accomplish his goal.

I felt like I'd kind of done my time. You know, I'd done [several] films with Marvel at that point. And I called up Kevin Feige--I'd heard that Robert Downey had sort of pushed the film to locations he wanted to be--and I [thought] maybe this is my opportunity. I said, 'You know, we've got this little country Australia which has this great crew and cast available. Maybe we can shoot there.' They were receptive, and we ended up shooting there... about 45 minutes [from my house].

Basically, Chris Hemsworth admitted on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that he had some information in regards to how Robert Downey Jr. had negotiated to film certain Marvel projects in places he wanted to be. Then, he turned on his Australian charm while speaking to Kevin Feige and used his wits and demeanor to convince the President of Marvel that filming in Australia was a good idea. It doesn't sound like it was honestly that hard, but it's still a sweet deal to convince a studio to film a movie so close that you can drive home whenever you want to.

While Marvel has a pretty tight lid on its projects, the company has been seen as fairly accommodating when it comes to trying new things. This is how Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi got away with improvising so much on the set of the upcoming movie. In fact, that's something else the Hemsworth interview touched on when Jimmy Kimmel revealed a clip during the episode.

As for Thor: Ragnarok, the new movie hits theaters on November 2, in wide release in the US. Tickets can already be pre-ordered.
