Unsane Trailer: Steven Soderbergh's New Movie Shot On The iPhone Looks Eerie And Intense

The horror genre has generally been on a major upswing over the course of the last few years, and we already have a number of 2018 horror thrillers to keep an eye on. One of the most intriguing of the bunch is Steven Soderbergh's Unsane, which has been kept relatively hidden through much of its development. Now it looks like we finally have our first good look at the Claire Foy-fronted psychological mind-bender, and yes, it seems like the Ocean's Eleven director actually shot the entire thing on the iPhone. Check out the bizarre trailer, below.

In a genre full of vampires, zombies, and bizarre found footage, Unsane takes a much more realistic (and yet no less terrifying) approach to the horror. The film centers its story on a woman (Claire Foy) who finds herself institutionalized with delusions (or are they?) of a stalker terrorizing her life. Unsane's trailer hints at an incredibly voyeuristic style, which likely stems from the fact that the film was shot through an iPhone lens. The result is a low-tech thriller that appears to lean far more heavily on the placement of the camera and what happens in front of the camera than it leans on fancy camera tricks.

Of course, even without the fact that Steven Soderbergh shot Unsane through the lens of an iPhone, there's quite a bit else to look forward to here. Aside from the decision to stick with a less advanced means of a capturing the on-screen action, the central performance by The Crown's Claire Foy also looks like an incredibly intriguing and exciting element for the film. Many of the scenes depicted in this preview seem to tease that she will carry much of the film's dramatic weight on her shoulders.

The decision to shoot Unsane on an iPhone seems to represent the latest in a recent run of creative gambles by Steven Soderbergh. In addition to this bizarre, asylum-based story, the director also recently helmed last year's critically-acclaimed (albeit not entirely financially successful) heist film Logan Lucky, and circumvented traditional distribution channels to get the film in front of audiences. Moreover, he also recently debuted the choose-your-own-adventure series, Mosaic, for HBO. Although he seemingly retired a few years ago, it's becoming increasingly apparent that a guy like Steven Soderbergh can't stay retired for very long until the decision to tinker and experiment with the filmmaking format becomes difficult to resist.

Steven Soderbergh's Unsane will hit theaters later this year on March 23. However, Unsane is just one of many films set to debut this year, so make sure to hop over to our movie premiere guide to get more information on all of the movies set to hit the silver screen in 2018!
