Cameron Diaz Has Reportedly Retired From Acting

Cameron Diaz There's Something About Mary

Acting is one of those jobs that many actors never quit doing, so retirement rarely comes up. It's even rarer to hear of retirement from somebody who is only 45-years-old. But such is apparently the case when it comes to Cameron Diaz. We haven't seen the actress since she appeared in Annie back in 2014, and the reason for that is that she has apparently retired from performing.

The news comes via her The Sweetest Thing co-star Selma Blair, who recently revealed that she had lunch with Cameron Diaz, and the pair discussed the 2002 comedy. Blair admitted she'd love to revisit the movie, but apparently, she could not coax Diaz out of retirement. According to Blair...

I would have liked to do a sequel but Cameron's retired from acting, she's like, 'I'm done.'

Cameron Diaz first appeared on screen opposite Jim Carrey in 1994's The Mask. She picked up another high profile role as the bride-to-be in the Julia Roberts comedy My Best Friend's Wedding, before what probably was her major star-making turn, as the title character in the comedy There's Something About Mary. She's also starred in the Charlie's Angels film franchise as well as Dreamworks' Shrek movies as Princess Fiona.

It's not uncommon for child stars to retire from acting to go on to other things, but normally adults who love acting end up doing it until they can't as there are almost always roles for actors at any age. This retirement also isn't because Cameron Diaz is not in demand. According to Metro, Diaz is regularly inundated with scripts to try and get her to come back, but she has rejected every single one. It's unclear if there's a scenario that might bring Diaz out of retirement. Selma Blair doesn't seem to think so, as Diaz is seemingly very happy with her life as it is.

I mean, she doesn't need to make any more films. She has a pretty great life, I don't know what it would take to bring her back. She's happy.

It will be interesting to see if there ever is anything that brings Cameron Diaz out of retirement. Perhaps if the long-rumored Shrek 5 ever comes to pass she'll be willing to bring her voice back to the franchise. It certainly seems that a Shrek movie that didn't have Diaz in it, or had a different voice for Fiona, would be all wrong.

If we never get Cameron Diaz in another movie it will be unfortunate. She's a great talent who has been responsible for some memorable film roles in recent years. But, if she's truly done, we can always go back and watch those roles again.
