Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves as Bill and Ted

It's been nearly 30 years since we last saw Alex Winter's Bill S. Preston Esq. and Keanu Reeves' Ted Logan on the big screen, but over the last decade, there have been numerous attempts have been made to get these two back together for another crazy adventure. Now it looks like Bill and Ted 3, a.k.a. Bill and Ted: Face the Music, is closer than ever to happen, and the story will see the eponymous protagonists attempting to save the world with their music, something that George Carlin's Rufus told them they would do all the way back in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. To that end, Ed Solomon, one of the writers who worked on the first two Bill and Ted movies, noted that the upcoming threequel is similar to Charles Dickens' classic tale A Christmas Carol, in that the duo will rediscover who they're meant to be. As Solomon put it:

I think it's kind of like A Christmas Carol with Bill and Ted. Looking at their lives, and really kind of rediscovering what they're about.

As you'll recall, at the end of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Rufus said that the music Bill and Ted would make together as the Wyld Stallyns would led to Earth becoming a utopia in the future. However, decades later, Bill and Ted are no closer to making that happen, and it's affecting their family lives in Bill and Ted: Face the Music. As Keanu Reeves previously revealed, someone comes from the future to tell them that if they don't write this music, not only is the world at stake, but the entire universe.

Ed Solomon has also said that there's a scene in Bill and Ted: Face the Music where the two middle-aged men will go back and time to watch themselves as high schoolers, and with that in mind, the Christmas Carol comparison he made to EW makes sense. At some point in the years after Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, those two lost their way, but he events of the third movie, particularly seeing their younger selves, will help set them on the right path, just like how being visited by those three ghosts helped Ebenezer Scrooge he needed to be kind and empathetic towards others.

Bill and Ted: Face the Music has been in development since 2010, and one of the reasons it's taken the movie so long for the movie to get off the ground is because studios have been more interested in financing a Bill and Ted reboot rather than a sequel starring the pair as middle-aged men. However, with a script in place and Galaxy Quest's Dean Parisot lined up to direct, Solomon also said he and the creative team are hoping to close a deal with some financiers "hopefully within the next month or so," and if that happens, then this long-awaited follow-up can finally move forward. With all the time that's passed not only since Bill and Ted 3 was announced, but also since the original movie aired, it's about time the characters finally have their Christmas Carol moments and become the heroes that the future needs.
