Apparently, Henry Cavill Has An Idea For Man Of Steel 2

Henry Cavill in Man of Steel

The DC Extended Universe is a tricky place. While Zack Snyder's Man of Steel wasn't necessarily intended to jumpstart a shared universe, the studio managed to shoot and release a handful of blockbusters in quick succession. While DC hasn't quite seen the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in regards to critical acclaim, it's clear that there's plenty of moviegoers who would be happy to shell out cash and see DC's finest on the silver screen in live-action. One DC movie that fans have been calling for is a Man of Steel sequel, giving Henry Cavill another chance at a Superman solo movie. The actor has already expressed his eagerness to step back into the blue and red, and now it turns out that he's got a specific vision for how he wants Clark's next movie to go. As Cavill tells it,

It is very much in my desire to do a Man of Steel 2, a direct sequel to Man of Steel, and there is a whole bunch of Superman story that I want to tell. There is a whole style of Superman's character that I'm very keen to tell and I'm looking forward to the opportunity.

Now this is interesting. While it's exciting that Henry Cavill is so eager to reprise his signature role, the concept of a direct sequel has storytelling possibilities that might not have been explored yet.

Henry Cavill's comments to Collider are sure to be a relief for DC fans, who may be worried about the future of the shared universe. DC movies have sen plenty of directors drop out off projects, and Ben Affleck seemingly trying to distance himself from his role as Batman. But Cavill seems dedicated to his tenure as Clark Kent, and has a few ideas for where he'd like to take his character in a future Man of Steel sequel.

The idea of a new style of Superman's character is particularly interesting, as Zack Snyder has yet to put the hero in his signature tone and story. Superman is the physical manifestation of hope, and he should be played with a certain level of joy and wonder. That's been severely lacking in the DCEU thus far, and is something that hopefully Henry Cavill is referencing.

Then again, Henry Cavill does mention a direct sequel, which makes it seem like he wants to explore the time directly following Man of Steel. This would bridge the gap between the first movie and Batman v Superman, although this seems unlikely. This would only bring back old character choices, and stop Superman from developing into someone new.

Ultimately it's unclear if/when Man of Steel 2 will be produced. The next installment in the DCEU is James Wan's Aquaman on December 21st, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
