The Crazy Lengths Deadpool 2 Went To Keep Its Plot Twists Secret

Deadpool about to jump out of the plane

Spoilers ahead for Deadpool 2.

While comic book movies are everywhere, the Deadpool franchise manages to stand out among the throng. This is due to the genre-defying tone, use of comedy, and Wade Wilson's penchant for narrating and breaking the fourth wall. And while Deadpool 2 is decidedly lighter and lower stakes than some of the MCU and DCEU's movies, there were plenty of unexpected plot twists to come from David Leitch's sequel. And in order to keep moments like Juggernaut's inclusion and Vanessa's death under wraps, the production of Deadpool 2 had to take desperate measures. Ryan Reynolds recounted these efforts in the commentary of Deadpool 2, saying:

Sometimes the secrecy thing gets ridiculous. Our sides came in red because apparently you can't photocopy red and you've got to turn your sides into the script coordinator at the end of the day and then she shreds them. It's like working in the CIA sometimes.

Well, that's intense. Just like Game of Thrones and Star Wars, the Deadpool franchise has taken extreme measures to ensure scripts don't get leaked. This includes printing them in red, and having the pages shredded immediately after each sequence wraps.

Ryan Reynolds' comments make a great deal of sense, considering how popular comic book movies are, and how eager the fandom is for any indication of each new blockbuster's plot before it arrives in theaters. While hardcore fans don't like spoilers in theory, the years spent theorizing and wondering about each new comic book movie can sometimes be too tempting. Cue the red script pages. At least they were in Deadpool's signature color.

As far as Deadpool 2's plot goes, there were a ton of unexpected moments throughout the course of the 119 runtime. The trailers purposefully threw moviegoers off, allowing the sequel to truly shock the rabid fandom. Vanessa's death early in the first act helped give some serious stakes to Deadpool 2, even if she ended up being revived in the film's bonkers credits sequence. Another one of the biggest shocks came from the X-Force members' fate. While the trailers heavily featured Wade Wilson's team of misfits, their first mission quickly went sideways. The recently recruited mutants (plus Peter) all died in grisly ways, showing how truly inept Wade Wilson is in the ways of superheroics. While these two scenes were shocking in very different ways, having the contents of Deadpool 2 spoiled would have ruined many of the film's biggest moments.

It should be interesting to see how security continues stepping up once ground breaks on the X-Force movie. Since both Deadpool and its sequel were massive successes, the pressure in to deliver a satisfying threequel, and service characters like Cable and Domino.

Deadpool 2 is available digitally now, and will arrive on Blu-ray August 21st. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
