The Eternals’ Angelina Jolie Really Wants To Join Star Wars

Angelina Jolie as Maleficent in Mistress of Evil

Angelina Jolie hasn't had an on screen role in a theatrical feature film since 2015. While the actress has certainly been busy, it's just been a while since we've seen her on the big screen. However, that's going to change starting this year. First she'll arrive on screens in October with Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and then she'll join Marvel's The Eternals in 2020.Considering that she's apparently now in big with Disney, one has to wonder, could she complete the hat trick with a part in Star Wars?

It seems Angelina Jolie herself is asking that question. MTV caught up with her at Disney's D23 Expo last weekend and asked her if she might pick up a Star Wars role at some point. It certainly sounds like she wants into that franchise as well, as she told them she's actually approached J.J. Abrams about it. As in, she literally approached him at the Expo to try and make it happen. According to Jolie...

I tried. I cornered J.J. in the hallway.

On the one hand, Angelina Jolie is clearly having some fun, but that doesn't mean she didn't really bring up the subject with franchise producer J.J. Abrams. If Angelina Jolie is interested in doing movies like Maleficent and joining the MCU, there's no reason to believe she's not also interested in joining the Star Wars franchise.

Jolie was born two years before the original Star Wars movie was released and that means she's part of the first generation to have grown up with Star Wars being part of her entire life. Pretty much anybody who grew up in those days is a Star Wars fan to one degree or another. Jolie even says she recently visited Disneyland and was sure to hit Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and get her picture taken with Salacious B. Crumb.

For what it's worth, Angelina Jolie says her conversation with J.J. Abrams went very well, but that she specifically asked him why she's not in the movies yet.

Pretty good. He's so nice. I have said to him, I have no idea why I can't be in Star Wars.

It seems that being an A-list star isn't enough to secure you a role in a Star Wars film. Emma Thompson has also spoken about how she has tried, and failed, to become part of the franchise.

Of course, with more Star Wars movies to come, there will always be more chances. The duo behind the Game of Thrones series are currently working on the next Star Wars movie. Rian Johnson has a new trilogy, and then of course, there are the Disney+ series on the way. If Angelina Jolie really wants a Star Wars role it seems likely she'll get one at some point, though she may need to get in line.
