Remember when Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth took about a year to slowly and exhaustingly break up in front of the entire world? Well, we’ve finally gotten some clarity as to why that weirdness happened. Apparently, Miley, like everyone else in the entire world, knew the relationship was over, but she didn’t want to sever the cord officially because that would have meant being alone.

Speaking to Barbara Walters about her relationship, the former Disney starlet admitted she felt a ton of fear, but after finally ripping off the Band-Aid, she’s apparently learned a ton about herself and her life. Here’s a portion of the exact quote, courtesy of US Magazine
"I was so scared of ever being alone, and I think, conquering that fear, this year, was actually bigger than any other transition that I had, this entire year. I don't ever want to have to need someone again, where you feel like, without them, you can't be yourself."

Ideally, Cyrus will get to the emotional maturity point where she will welcome someone back into her life and even let herself rely on that person. There’s a big difference between that and being completely unable to function without another human being, but if learning where that line is requires being alone for a little while, that’s definitely what she should do right now. With her rigorous touring schedule, I can’t imagine it would be easy to maintain a steady relationship anyway.

The segment Cyrus was interviewed for will run as part of Walters’ annual year end interview special: The 10 Most Fascinating People. The program will run on December 18 and may be her last splashy network feature given she’s already announced she’ll retire during the coming year. To learn more about the starlet’s eccentricities and what drives her, I’d advise checking it out.
