Ending an engagement is an ugly, messy, awful, soul-crushing, relief-filled, euphoric and miserable experience. In exchange for not making a dumb decision and spending the rest of your life with someone who doesn’t love you and/ or isn’t ready to get married, the dumper and the dumpee gain the privilege of doing such awkward tasks as calling family members to tell them the wedding is off and deciding who gets to keep the mutual possessions, most notably the ring.
That last issue has been on the minds of many observers since Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth finally decided to end the engagement we all knew was doomed. Neither member of the once promising couple has spoken publically about who will keep the shiny $100,000 piece of jewelry designed by Neil Lane, but according to Radar Online, sources close to the couple are saying he told her to keep it “as a memento of their love affair”. That’s, of course, code for, “you sell the damn thing” since no one ever continues to wear an engagement ring after the relationship ends.
Here’s a portion of what that same source supposedly had to say…
“When Liam bought that ring, he truly believed he would be spending the rest of his life with her. Now he realizes they are both just too young to be ready for such a big commitment.”
Some day, Hemsworth will look back and find some amusement in thinking about this four year, much publicized fiasco, but for the time being, it’s understandable why he’s running as fast as possible in another direction. Carousing with women who look like Eliza Gonzalez is certainly a whole lot more fun than driving to an ex’s house to pick up a ring and then finding a place to sell it, especially when Hemsworth doesn’t exactly need the money. That being said, he could still get thousands of dollars out of that ring with minimal effort.
What do you think? If you were Liam, would you have asked for the ring back? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
