More than three years after former Disney darling Miley Cyrus released the hit single “Party in the U.S.A” the 20-year-old is still big on partying, but instead of fun, outdoor events featuring cowboy boots, her newest single offers an urban wardrobe and Cyrus making out with a giant look-alike doll. These are actually two of the more boring features of the new music video for her single “We Can’t Stop.”
The bizarre night of partying in a huge house features Cyrus’ now familiar twerking, frequently with a giant teddy bear strapped to her back. There’s also the pool party, where the aforementioned doll makeout occurs, as well as plenty of scenes featuring Cyrus sticking out her tongue or rolling around, barely clothed, on a bed. Lest I forget, there’s also a creepy scene where smoke blows out of a dude’s crotch, bringing new imagery to the term fire-breathing dragon.
The “We Can’t Stop” video is a pretty big turnaround from the image of the long-haired and youthful Cyrus who “hopped off a plane at L.A.X. with a dream and a cardigan.” Now, the singer opts for a bleached-out, shorthaired look and emboldening lipstick. Instead of singing about the promise of a place, she’s telling her fans to own their own lives, noting, “Remember only God can judge us” and “Forget the haters cause somebody loves ya.”
Songwriting duo Rock City wrote the song, telling Vibe magazine that the track was initially intended for Rihanna, another girl in the music realm who doesn’t seem to give a crap. While the lyrics could work for either pop songstress, the video and song is actually perfect for Cyrus, who has been going through more adult troubles over the last few years, including a very big break-up with her fiancé, Liam Hemsworth, and dealing with pot rumors and the salvia scandal.
This brand new Miley Cyrus is the first big release we’ve seen from the singer since 2010’s Can’t Be Tamed. You may not love the “We Can’t Stop” video, but it certainly does put Cyrus on a new path for her brand new album, which currently still lacks a title and a release date. According to Billboard, the new effort will feature collaborations with will.i.am, Dr. Luke, and Pharrell are all collaborating on her newest endeavor. We’ll keep you updated as the pop singer moves forward with her newest release.
